And, when he speaks, he doesnt sound much like one either. The founder of US outdoor apparel brand Patagonia believes stock market valuations are absurd, investing in shares is buying blue sky and modern-day capitalism is destroying the planet.
Id like to see an end to public corporations because were not going to revolutionise them, were not going to change them, the self-confessed reluctant businessman told the Guardian.
It is easy to dismiss such comments as sour grapes or market envy. As a private company (Chouinard remains sole owner), Patagonia lacks the investment clout of Nike or The North Face.
Not that that has necessarily restricted the plucky Californian brand, which posted sales revenues of more than $1bn last year.

We simply cant pussyfoot around anymore. We have to just say, you know, this administration is evil and anybody who is denying climate change is evil.

(36,444 posts)He, and his company has addressed microfiber pollution and admit their products have contributed to the mess; they are spending serious money to find a solution.
His company also stopped building stores and fixtures out of cherry and old growth VG Douglas Fir woods, and opted to use recycled wood. I used to build for them back in the eighties, but only heard of the switch after I moved on. Word is, the woodworkers love working with the recycled wood once they sorted out the particular properties of working one-hundred year old timbers.
Oh, Patagonia has committed the $10 million it saved from federal tax cuts championed by President Donald Trump to nonprofit groups who work on conservation and climate issues. And this is above the 1% of their sales they already give to the GREEN movement.
