WASHINGTON (Reuters) - In another first for rookie congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the liberal Democrat from New York on Friday became the youngest woman to preside over the U.S. House of Representatives.
Sitting in House Speaker Nancy Pelosis chair as part of a routine rotation of House members, Ocasio-Cortez took her turn with the gavel and ran the chamber for about an hour. The duty is shared day-to-day by members of the House majority, currently the Democrats.
That was my first time presiding. And its exciting. Its certainly a view. I wish we could, I wish we were allowed to take photos, she told reporters after the session.
Ocasio-Cortez describes herself as a Democratic socialist and is the most prominent member of a group of female Democrats elected to the House for the first time last November, bolstering the partys liberal wing.

(52 posts)I love AOC. But I think it would be good for her to have that position for a day instead of just an hour. She's smart as hell, but it's human to think you can do a better job than the boss. Maybe having to make real decisions that have real impact she'd have a little more deference for Pelosi.

Which is probably recognized by the Speaker. That is why she allows rotation of other members into her position. They all deserve to be there

(249 posts)Good dogs heel. The colonists didn't "defer" to the Crown, I wouldn't expect a duly elected representative to "heel" or "defer" to anyone in what many consider a free country.
The good thing about a lot of young people today is that appeals to "authority" fall deaf upon their ears.
I thinks it's why boomers, reactionaries, and authoritarians largely pick a bone with AOC and the other newly-elected WOMEN in Congress: bowing down and submitting to authority NO MATTER WHAT is encoded in their DNA, especially with some "older" folk (I'm one of them, an old person) who still carry the weight of being programmed to respect authority without question.
Comes through in lots of comments that translate to "well, authority figures know best, so don't dare question!"
Or even in this thread with comments that assume there is a employer/W2 employee relationship between the Speaker of the House and Members of Congress.
But most people have been W2 employees their whole lives, they're used to bucking down, bowing down, and being told what to do for most of their lives.

Im a boomer too. But Ive been hoping for a long time that a newer generation would come along and save us from our ineffective selves. I think AOC is just exactly that. Along with many courageous other new legislators.
