Interesting ties of Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals

Last edited Fri May 3, 2019, 05:06 PM - Edit history (1)

Mallinckrodt is in the news for astronomical drug price increases. See CNN's report. https://amp.cnn.com/cnn/2019/04/30/health/mallinckrodt-whistleblower-lawsuit-acthar/index.html

The DOJ is stepping in.

This company is also the only one with legal access to cocaine...The leaves originally go to Stepan Company, where they are processed. The cocaine produced goes to Mallinckrodt, while the leftover leaves go to Coca Cola.
It also restructured to avoid taxes.

Im interested in how the DOJ will deal with this company considering its unique cocaine access...

.....looking further into to their products...

The opioid epidemic might be tied directly and indirectly through this company and its subsidiaries.

Opioids are either extracts of poppies, or synthetic analogs of poppy extract.

Also, the effects of the two drugs are completely opposite: opioids are depressants, cocaine is a stimulant.

Given that, Mallinckrodt makes a LOT of opium derivatives. I'm looking at their website, and most of what they make is bulk pharmaceuticals that are packaged by other people. They have some interesting packaged drugs of their own...they have an injectable acetaminophen, a nitric oxide gas for treating hypoxia in newborns, a fairly good-size CNS portfolio...

It appears that companies like Purdue (which IS responsible for the epidemic) buy their raw materials from Mallinckrodt and turn that product into labeled meds.
