Books and movies sell differently. Generating a buzz about a book by pushing it onto the best-seller list would work.

Movies have a very limited shelf-life. Next week's take on this movie will be substantially lower than this weeks.

They've severely limited the number of screens this thing is being shown on, so theatre-goers will see pretty full auditoriums.

are buying tickets for the congregation, probably for "donations." Even people who donate don't seem all that interested in seeing it but it does pump up the numbers.

has a fringe audience and they are promoting it as by the producer of Schindler's list

I have heard incidental tales of people realizing it is propaganda and asking for their money back or going into a different theatre and seeing something else
