Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI was making phone calls for Obama earlier
today from a list in the office. I call this man and this is what he says to me "I hate his guts, that f***ing communist."
If you don't agree with democrats, then fine. Where does this "Obama is a communist" shit come from?
And here is the kicker, I know from the address on the call sheet that this man lives around the block from me!

He probably was wise enough to know you shouldn't say that out loud. By contrast, when I was canvassing door to door in 2004 (in Michigan), one respondent had no such compunctions. He said, "I wouldn't vote for that filthy n***er if you paid me."
As I see it, the statements were probably somewhat equivalent.
*On edit: Let me explain why I think there is some equivalence, and why "communist" might be a coded reference to "black." When people from the right say "communist," they're usually referring to a "redistribution" of wealth through the tax code or budget to poorer classes. Now, whether true or not, most of them also see these poorer classes as comprising largely the African American community. They can't stand thinking their hard-earned money will go to support black people on "welfare."

My hairdresser and I think alike politically. The woman who assists in her shop, well, I didn't know. The hairdresser "invited" me out of the shop to talk on Friday, and said that in a conversation, the woman's husband said to her, "You know who's to blame for this mess? That fucking n***** in the White House." So, yes, that's what they mean.

(1,526 posts)My ex-wife (whom I had never had a political discussion of any kind with) came up with "right wing socialist" the other day. I can deal with cognitive dissonance but I couldn't quite twist my mind around that one.
So, I asked her where she'd gotten this and a bunch of Fox talking points came pouring out...
He's apparently enacting policies that are taxing us to the point where no one will want to work anymore and then there won't be anyone with any money to pay for those cushy benefits that all those parasitic poor people are lounging around collecting (that is a paraphrase btw).
You have to understand that Fox is pushing story lines like this and then they get told to one person who tells another who tells another and then it's all like a game of telephone. You've got Stuart Varney, Sean Hannity, Glen Beck, Eric Boling, Steve Doocy, Brian Kilmeade...just spewing this crap all day long. And then it gets mistranslated and turns into "right wing socialist"--which is probably not any worse than "left wing fascist"...
People don't even know what the terms they're using mean anymore and they're not trying to find out.
Obama is the "other". He's the wrong color and he talks all professorial and he's a Democrat so he has to have raised taxes and he palled around with Marxists and probably is one. And, by god, he's a Muslim too even though he was attending that church where that black power preacher Jeremiah Wright was preaching about killing white people.
When you run into one of these folks that have just absorbed it all like a sponge and are just waiting to spew it onto you--well, you just have to move on.
Unfortunately, I didn't follow my own advice and had a text war with my ex. And, now, for the first time in 25 years she didn't wish me a happy birthday yesterday. I guess I ruined one of the most successful divorces there ever was.
I'm going to miss her.
