Jerusalem Train Stop to Be Named for Trump on Independence Day

Acting Foreign Minister and Transportation Minister Israel Katz says he’s going to use the occasion of Israel’s 71st Independence Day next week to officially announce plans to name a Jerusalem train stop for the U.S. president. (and never mind that Katz announced the same plan in December 2017)

“Here, in the Old City of Jerusalem, we will build the Western Wall & Temple Mount train station,” Katz said in a Tweet. “It will be named after Donald Trump, who made history and recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.”

Jerusalem won’t be the only place where Israel is honoring Trump. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said last week that Israel would name a community in the Golan Heights after the president, who officially recognized Israeli sovereignty over the strategic plateau Israel captured from Syria in the 1967 Middle East war.

Trump’s Jerusalem move in December 2017 broke with world opinion and was followed by the relocation of the U.S. Embassy to the city last May. Palestinians, who claim eastern parts of Jerusalem for a future capital, broke off contacts with the Trump administration in response.
