Notice how subtly Trebek takes his digs - he just let James know that his French isn't that good by correcting the pronunciation.
Trebek's patience is running thin.

7. I did laugh but I would have said thank you

My mother spoke several languages - she corrected us ad nauseum - better to get it right.
One of my nieces speaks beautiful French and she corrected one of my siblings to the point that my sis dragged her hubby to France for six weeks to correct her French

9. I suspect James would have

said it correctly if he had ever heard it spoken correctly or had taken French vs reading/preparing on his own. I can understand why he has a "so what?" or "big deal" type of response.

I've always found Alex rather supercilious.

James speaks Japanese - heard him pronouncing a word on one of the 16 days.
I do enjoy the inter-personal dynamics.

I also loved when he said the other contestants were politely clapping when they were probably not really happy for him LOL!

8. Alex was speaking for himself

On the one hand it's fun watching a really clever person show them that he's not in Jeopardy, but I have a tinge of sadness for Trebek for this is probably his last season.
