More automation.....How long before there are staff cuts?

1. There will be lots of staff cuts.

While I can appreciate the convenience of this and the speed I feel like there will be lots missing here. While humans make mistakes or miss things there is absolutely no way this tech can read a chart, know what the patient and doc are dealing with and put it together. It is that help from the lab techs and the pathologists that add the additional info that the docs need. This scares me a bit. Having spent time working in a hospital lab, I was only a phlebotomist, I had a lot of experience listening to the conversations and consultations. They were frequent when needed. Even us nurses (I was a nurse later) called and talked lab work with the lab folks. My husband was a pathologist and from him I know just how much will be missing here. While some innovations are great and very helpful this will not make it cheaper or better for patients. Just one more removal of human minds and caring and that is hurting health care already.

3. I agree

that the advance of AI and consolidation will lead to staffing cuts in areas that we never believed it would be possible. First time I saw the commercial for Colo-guard (or whatever the name is), the mail in colonoscopy test I knew that jobs were on the block.

This will reach far beyond manufacturing, restaurants, warehousing and retail. I know of only one candidate discussing this at present I hope they all come around to the topic before many more jobs are lost.

6. about 20 years ago a good friend was a phlebotomist

and he tried to get me interested in medicine. He arranged to have me shadow him for a day at his hospital. I was totally cool until he had to get blood from an infant.



I had to leave the room and it reinforced my aversion to blood draws
