Trump off to Indianapolis tomorrow to kiss the ass of the NRA

Don is giving payback for the $$$ they gave his campaign.

Audit shows NRA spending surged $100 million amidst pro-Trump push in 2016

The National Rifle Association’s overall spending surged by more than $100 million in 2016, surpassing any previous annual NRA spending totals on record, according to an audit obtained by the Center for Responsive Politics.

The explosion in spending came as the NRA poured unprecedented amounts of money into efforts to deliver Donald Trump the White House and help Republicans hold both houses of Congress.

The audit filed with the state of North Carolina shows that the NRA’s total expenditures exploded to more than $419 million, up from $312 million the prior year.

The jump is even more stark when compared to its spending during the previous two presidential elections in 2012 and 2008, when their outlays topped out at $261 million and $204 million, respectively, according to similar audits. These spending totals include all of the NRA’s operations in 2016, from law enforcement programs and hunter services to education and training.

They need his support as much as he needs theirs. This is NRA-ILA not just NRA.

The NRA is a mass membership and fundraising organization with no party discipline. The NRA-ILA is a registered lobby with all that implies.

The real story is what senators and members of congress are there, not The Don making a fatuous fundraising speech to the choir.

NRA Cuts More Operating Costs-and Lavishes Executives With Perks

The NRA Is Being Sued Over Its Relentless Telemarketing Campaigns

When begging for bucks goes wrong.

https://www.thedailybeast.com/the-nra-is-being-sued-over-its-relentless-telemarketing-campaigns

The NRA has employed InfoCision since 2012 under a contract that grants the fundraising company up to 65 percent of the funds it raises on the NRA’s behalf. InfoCision gets between $2.50 and $3.75 for each “completed call” to potential NRA donors, and up to half of the regular payments for new or renewed NRA memberships.
-------------------------------------------

If those high fees are unavoidable, they can also have the effect of obscuring, for a potential donor, exactly where his or her money is going. Many of those speaking with an InfoCision fundraiser, after all, will not know that a majority of their donation is not going to the charity that fundraiser is representing.

comment from a blog (DU I think)

I had a coworker who was a big time gun owner who kept a gun in every room in the house just in case someone broke in (lots of problems with that idea, may be worth a blog article someday, but that’s what he did). He even went so far as to start buying more guns for each room after a school shooting, like home invasion and mass shooting are correlated somehow. He had let his NRA membership lapse and refused to renew it because he got tired of nonstop requests for donations. To him all the membership did was give the NRA to badger him for more money with phone calls, and direct mailings. If the
organization is as strapped for cash as it appears, those solicitations may have gone way over the top and people are simply tired of being badgered for money and are choosing to let their membership to lapse.

During NRA speech, Trump drops out of another global arms treaty
https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/trump-administration-expected-to-distance-itself-from-global-arms-treaty/2019/04/26/82e19736-f0ee-4cfe-b086-a6b5d89c1ec8_story.html?noredirect=on&utm_term=.50fc90f55e88

President Trump announced Friday that he would end U.S. support for a global arms pact known as the Arms Trade Treaty in the latest illustration of his aversion to international agreements and world governance.

“We will never allow foreign bureaucrats to trample on your Second Amendment freedom,” Trump said during remarks at the National Rifle Association’s annual meeting in Indianapolis.

“I’m officially announcing today that the United States will be revoking the effect of America’s signature from this badly misguided treaty,” he said.

...

The treaty seeks to prevent illicit arms transfers that fuel destructive conflicts, making it harder to conduct weapon sales in violation of arms embargoes. About 100 countries — including U.S. allies in Europe — have ratified the treaty, while more than 30 others have signed but not ratified. Countries that have shunned the treaty entirely include Russia, North Korea and Syria.

...

So the "merchants of death" slam isn't just some florid rhetoric.
