(25,914 posts)Come 2020, if the Democrats have done NOTHING, Trump and his minions will claim loudly that he was exonerated, and therefore deserving of re-election. And the Democrat's only reply will be, "Well, the only reason we didn't impeach was because we didn't think it would pass the Senate"? Really?
This is a lot like a parent not bothering to set a child straight on what's acceptable behavior and what is not acceptable.
NurseJackie
(42,862 posts)That's simply not true. But what IS true is that if the Senate fails to convict, THAT will be when the GOP and Trump claim that he's been exonerated and "found innocent".
Surely you've seen it, it's been in all the papers and all over TV.
Rambling Man
(249 posts)GOP cannot be relied upon to do the right thing.
Making the determination about doing what is right should NOT ride on what repubs think or do.
They live in a fact-free universe of lies.
It's like trying to reason with a recalcitrant toddler: just not possible or even worthwhile.
On edit: Trumpistas already believe Trump is innocent, has been exonerated, and is the second coming of Christ.
Bridge crossed/ship sailed on that.

(18,486 posts)Because no damage was done.
First, she didn't "take impeachment off the table.""
Second, Pelosi and the Dems are going about this the right way.
If they filed Articles of Impeachment today, they would be based solely on the information in the Mueller report. No Emoluments. No tax returns. No money laundering. Just the Mueller Report. And the inquiry would be, not what else Trump has done wrong, but whether the information in the Mueller Report rises to the level of a high crime or misdemeanor. We already know where everyone stands on this. And the impeachment inquiry would pretty much shut down any other investigations by other committees into any other crimes or misdemeanors Trump has engaged in because they would not be subject of the impeachment inquiry, which would be limited to the allegations in the Articles of Impeachment.
The only appropriate way to proceed is for the various committees in the House to continue their investigations, hold public hearings through which the American people can hear from Mueller, McGahan, et al and watch Donnie, Jr., Priebus, Kelly, Mnuchin, Miller and other assorted co-consipirators testify under oath and get raked over the coals. In short order, the public will see exactly how corrupt and craven this administration is and THEN the Judiciary Committee can draft Articles of Impeachment that encompass the broad range of crimes Trump has engaged in.
And if, despite the public pressure and the damning public record, the Republicans refuse to convict him in the Senate, it will be all on them.

(18,486 posts)But if they can ignore subpoenas in a House investigation, they can also ignore subpoenas in an impeachment inquiry.
My take is correct.

StarfishSaver
(18,486 posts)and starting an impeachment process that won't further expose his other wrongdoing or result in his removal from office won't have any more impact on what's happening at the border than holding additional hearings, developing a stronger, more sustainable case will.

To not think even the redacted Report is not enough is surprising.
StarfishSaver
(18,486 posts)But that's not the issue since it's not only about us.
Most people haven't read the report cover to cover or even partially, and aren't going to. They're going to need to be convinced in more tactile ways. That will come through in-person testimony, day-to-day coverage, etc.
We all need to slow our roll and let this proceed the right way!

Nancy said yesterday...
"We have to save our democracy. This isnt about Democrats or Republicans. Its about saving our democracy, Pelosi said.
Smarter people than me have stated that there is more than enough in the Mueller report to begin Impeachment hearings.
i agree with Sen. Warren. Go through the process and make every Senator stand before the American people to declare their vote.
Good grief. It's the very least we can do.
StarfishSaver
(18,486 posts)There may be more than enough in the Mueller Report "technically" to support impeachment, but it's not enough in this climate.
If Articles of Impeachment are filed now, the other investigations would essentially have to shut down because the impeachment inquiry would be limited to what's in the articles.
Why the rush? What's wrong with waiting a few more months to enable the other committees to conduct in-depth hearings and investigations that gather an entire sh*tload of evidence that can be included in the Articles, making a virtually fool-proof case for impeachment and convincing a much larger segment of the public to support it?
I'm really glad that Speaker Pelosi is not being swayed by the hysteria in the ranks and jumping the gun so that we can try to "get him" even if that means falling on our faces in the long run and that she and her team are keeping their eyes on the prize, moving methodically and carefully toward the goal we're all trying to achieve.
The least we can do is to take the time to get it right.
