Investigation & Impeachment Committees & Barbara Jordan speaks on why Nixon must be impeached
I think there is some misunderstanding about how various committees function (functioned) in an impeachment situation. The House Judiciary Committee only considers impeachment when authorized by a House vote brought to the floor by the House Leader (Nancy).
But the committee hearings that many people remember and associate with the Nixon impeachment had begun a full year earlier than the House Judicial Committee Impeachment Hearings.
It was in February 1973 that the (Democratic majority) Senate established a Committee to investigate Watergate. It was chaired by "Senator Sam" Ervin, and it was hearings by this committee that were so broadly televised, and that elicited much of the testimony we associate now with Nixon's impeachment, including John Dean's testimony about the cancer on the president's office, the existence of the White House tapes, Senator Howard Baker's slow about-face on whether to impeach, and so much more.
The actual impeachment hearings by the Judicial Committee were authorized a full year later in February, 1974 (when the Senate Committee on Watergate finished their work) and the Judicial Impeachment Committee passed Articles of Impeachment in July, 1974. Those six months were largely filled with drilling into and sorting through the legal details of the nefarious acts uncovered by the Senate Committee. Many supoenas were issued and fought through the courts. It was when those and other legal matters were complete that the Articles of Impeachment were finalized and passed.

In 2019, a serious Senate investigation regarding Trump is out of the question. A bipartisan Senate committee specially established to investigate Trump will not be allowed by McConnell, even if the Senate majority was in favor of one. That means all the investigation of Trump falls on the House standing committees.
And it is unlikely that these various committees, investigating various aspects of Trump's crap, will get the media attention the Senate Watergate Committee received. Perhaps when some "special" witness appeared. As a general rule though, we could see them streamed on C-Span, You Tube, etc., as we do now, but they would only be broadcast on Cable and Network tv for special "events".
I am not suggesting for a minute that is a reason not to impeach. (I actually favor impeaching this prick just as strongly as I favored impeaching Nixon.) I'm suggesting it will be a long, difficult haul. We need to understand what it will involve. We had giants in Congress in those days. Are our current leaders up to it? I truly do not know.
