IMO, 2020 political pressure will not work. 17 of the 21 repugs whose terms currently expire in 2021 were elected in deep-red states ((went for repugs the past 4 presidential elections)). I think the incumbents are more terrified of challengers in the primaries if they don't go easy on HIM.
Yes, the House committees should hold hearings. Lots of them. But in my opinion, even impeachment itself might fail ((at this point; maybe not after hearings)). Any tit-for-tat from proceeding could risk ANOTHER government "shutdown".

(3,344 posts)The House must do its duty. It is independent from the Senate. House members must uphold the oath they took to defend the Constitution. Presidents cannot be allowed to act this way.
We can't allow the Senate to veto what the House does. It would mean the House should pass no bills that won't pass the Senate.
A lack of impeachment will encourage Trump to again coordinate with Russia and other foreign powers to attack our election process.

(22,756 posts)what is crucial is that the House Democrats make a bold statement that Trump's behavior is not acceptable... the House must do their job and hold people accountable for actions that hurt this Country... if the Republicans choose not to do their job, that is on them...

(90,347 posts)... was floating around for nearly 2 years, I was sucked in and believed it out right and now I find out its false.
There doesn't seem to be a historical political downside to impeachment, Johnson and Clinton faced negative impacts to impeachment.
Right now 40% of Americans support Trump being impeached, 43% of Americans supported Nixon being impeached so we're pretty close to where we were during the 70s.

I don't think removing Red Don from office is goal any longer seeing Moscow Mitch (another Putin whore) isn't going to move for it no matter if they have Red Don on tape giving Putin a handy

(51,574 posts)But it is not pointless to move to impeach Trump in the House.
Rather than informal hearings, we need to commence formal impeachment investigation hearings. That is what will garner media attention to Trump crimes.
Also, it is the only way we will get Grand Jury info.
From the Washington Post:
In the face of Barrs decision not to disclose any of the Mueller report to the public or even to the House Judiciary Committee chaired by Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D- N.Y.) until Barr and his team have scrubbed the report of grand jury information (and other material), Nadler and committee Democrats have authorized a subpoena for the full report, setting the stage for a court fight over the committees right to see grand jury information. Although the public need underlying the request for disclosure in McKeever was much less pressing, the decision in that case undermines the position of Nadlers committee, because the controlling federal rule contains no exception allowing congressional oversight committees to demand access to otherwise secret grand jury proceedings.
One of the exceptions to grand jury secrecy is disclosure preliminary to or in connection with a judicial proceeding. To authorize disclosure of the Watergate grand jury information, the special prosecutors office argued that the House had authorized its Judiciary Committee to conduct a formal impeachment inquiry and that such an inquiry could be fairly analogized to a grand jury investigation and thus a judicial proceeding. Both the district court and the court of appeals agreed, and the Judiciary Committee obtained both the report and the underlying evidence.
Significantly, the appeals court decision several days ago reaffirmed that exception. All three judges agreed that an impeachment inquiry falls within the exception for judicial proceedings and coheres with other rulings about the proper scope of grand jury secrecy.

We don't need the Senate to impeach Trump, only to vote to remove him. The House has the votes to make Trump the 3rd president in history to be impeached. We must be on record that this traitorous committed obstruction of justice.

Also, Rudy G has already intimated multiple times yesterday that Red it's OK for Red Don to use information from Russia.

(891 posts)If voters clearly believe that Trump is guilty of crimes and the Senate doesn't take that into consideration, that should benefit Democrats in 2020, not hurt them.
