after Mueller testifies before Congress.
While it is almost certain that Senate will not vote to convict, the argument for impeachment, regardless whether the Senate convicts or not, is it puts everyone on record in Congress where they stand on damning evidence in the Mueller report.
Mueller made it clear in the report that he will not indict Trump because he believes a sitting President cannot be indicted. However, he also made it clear that after a president leaves office, he absolutely can be indicted.
He refused to exonerate trump, and left it up to Congress to decide if he should be removed from office.
If somehow impeachment and conviction did happen, I wouldn't be surprised if Pence pardoned trump, as Ford pardoned Nixon.
Because of the Mueller report, I believe the House must introduce articles of impeachment, whether it is successful or not, it will put everyone on the record, and let the chips fall where they may

I also said that would be ideal, but I also believe he could be called during impeachment hearings themselves

(11,631 posts)...to run out the statute of limitations on all the crimes detailed in the investigation? Then what? I just don't understand "impeachment because its our duty" argument. Its our duty to do everything possible to make sure Trump is not president for another 4 years.

(92,219 posts)The facts from the Mueller report is we have a President who tried to obstruct justice. There are 10 instances of that cited in the report.
Going through the process of impeachment not only will acknowledge that, but will put people on the record if they believe that obstructing justice is ok, and I think that is important. Doing nothing will setup a dangerous precedent, that obstruction of justice is not an impeachable offense, and that in my view is not good

Pence equals pardon.
If he's voted out then he gets an indictment the first day he walks out of the WH.
Which do we want?

(92,219 posts)However, the message would be loud and clear that a president should not obstruct justice, and is not above the law
Whether impeachment and conviction are successful or not, people will be on the record whether they believe a President is above the law
