Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi announced that she has asked for a security assessment for Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MI), and demanded that Donald Trump take down the dangerous video he posted to attack the freshman congresswoman.
Trump posted a video that isolated a remark by Rep. Omar, and interspersed it with clips of the 9/11 attacks in progress. Since then, he has faced criticism for willfully endangering the life of Rep. Omar, although he was just one of several Republicans to launch inflammatory attacks against her.
On Sunday, Speaker Pelosi released a statement calling on Trump to take down the video, which has drawn widespread criticism for its potential to incite violence against Muslims, and Omar in particular (via email from Speaker Pelosis office):
Pelosi Statement on the Safety of Congresswoman Omar
London Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement:
Following the Presidents tweet, I spoke with the Sergeant-at-Arms to ensure that Capitol Police are conducting a security assessment to safeguard Congresswoman Omar, her family and her staff. They will continue to monitor and address the threats she faces.
The Presidents words weigh a ton, and his hateful and inflammatory rhetoric creates real danger. President Trump must take down his disrespectful and dangerous video.

(9,090 posts)the attacks have been constant on rw radio and it's fucking absurd that we let 88 major universities to continue to support 260 limbaugh stations while they spew islamophobia, racism, and global warming denial.

(33,643 posts)Despicable that they should even consider it an option to leave it up. Guess they're too afraid of the 'censorship' accusations coming from the RWNJ's lately ... to do the right thing.

(7,432 posts)The guy's got to be scared shitless of Trumpy, who can say anything he wants in violation of Twitter's Terms of Service. With tens of millions of followers of Trumpy, Dorsey likely makes a lot of money by allowing Trumpy the complete freedom to be abusive and incite violence. Others' accounts would have been terminated long ago.

(34,072 posts)Twitter less so, and I don't have a WhatsAp account.
I use facebook to keep up with family and friends. I live 1000 miles away from where I grew up - and I'm not much for phones or letters. I've also developed a large collection of electronic friends with whom I share the same (sometimes rare) illnesses. So I have deep bonds with everyone (prior to my current job) that I am friends with on facebook - but we don't necessarily share political opinions. I've had some remarkable conversations with people that I'm stuck with, for one reason or another, about politics. I've had a number of people who are conservatives that I've had conversations with about abortion and health care who tell me that I'm the only liberal they talk to, because we actually have conversations. At times they get overwhelming, so I just don't respond, but when I'm able, they get a little peek at someone they perceive as rational who supports different policies than they do.
In my current job, once my students graduate, I accept friend requests from them - which is a different (but also interesting) dynamic.
