I know most of y'all don't think a lot of Mississippi

But my people are being pummeled by tornadoes right now. I have people all over the area they’re warning people to take shelter in right now.

Send up a good thought. They are suffering and we are caring people.

Mississippi is like everywhere else. It's a Beauty and a Beast, all at once.

The Deep South has always been an enigma to me. It's a beautiful place, with beautiful people,
the best music America has to offer, great food, etc., but the dark side is real dark. I come from a place with a dark side, as well (Chicago). I know that I can't truly understand a place where I don't live, but we all have an
ugly side to our everyday worlds.

We sure aren't strangers to tornadoes in our beloved South, are we? Middle TN where I originated was in tornado alley for a while many years ago.

I see Vicksburg got hit pretty hard and now it's over into AL. Darn thing is giving us lots of rain in northern KY and it runs plum up north of Indy at this time. TX and LA both got hit pretty hard in spots, including some deaths......

Stay safe, and you're certainly in our thought tonight and during recovery tomorrow.......

I grew up in Mississippi....In Jackson for first 14 years and Gulf Coast (Gautier) later on. So while I know full well of the state’s issues, it is still my home state. I also have close family there. Our son lives just outside Jackson with his three kids and one grandchild. So when bad weather threatens that area, my personal radar goes haywire.

They got through last night okay and we’re grateful. Me? I slept in my recliner with husband on couch because the storms passed us in the middle of the night. (In NW FL.) I turned up my phone so I could hear alerts. Put purse and shoes in central bathroom. Luckily did not need any of it but we were ready if we got the alert.

Sincere thoughts go to the victims of yesterday’s storms. Now it moves on. Please pay attention if you are in the path. Nature has no mercy and does not play favorites. If you are in the path, you are in danger. Find your safe place and have a plan!

Good luck to all.

Sun Apr 14, 2019, 06:00 PM
Apr 2019

I'm always amazed when I travel around the country to find so many places subject to tornado seasons that don't have basements like here in West Central/Southwest Ohio.

I realize some places like Florida and parts of Louisiana have very high water tables and similar issues which preclude basements, but there are lots of other places that don't have those problems, are prone to tornadoes and don't have basements.

In the Dayton, Ohio metro area where we live, builders skipped basements for years--not even offering them--to keep the price of houses down. In the last 15 years, we've had four occasions where we took cover in our basement during a tornado warning. During one of those times, the tornado was on the ground about 7 miles west of us and on a straight path our way, but it broke up after about a half mile of travel through open fields.

So if one lives in a tornado-prone area, why wouldn't you have a basement for shelter, let alone extra storage or recreational space?

Basements are also a problem in places where the land is really flat, even if it is high above sea level, because all water seeks the lowest point and a basement can be that lowest point. Basements are most practical where the land is uneven and water does not drain to the lowest point on your small property.

In every state there are good and bad people. I'm sorry that you guys are going through a tough weather situation. I find tornadoes scarier than hurricanes. I lived in FL and we got plenty of warning when a hurricane was approaching, but with tornadoes they can strike so fast and with little warning.

I wish you and your state the best. Here are good vibes going your way.
