You do have to be polite. There are signs to determine who has right-of-way. I made a large truck back up once when I was well over halfway across when he started on. I was just on the phone to my KIWI BIL and reminisced about one of our trips to the west coast. One bridge was shared by autos and the railroad. The train had to wait while we crossed.
