A poem / lyric I wrote about sadism in late 2016
It bubbled up out of nowhere- the loathing, the disgust. Once I got the first line I couldn’t stop it. Jackson Browne’s Pretender has haunted me since I first heard it
Ah the laughter of the lovers
As they run through the night
Leaving nothing for the others
But to choose off and fight
And tear at the world with all their might
While the ships bearing their dreams
Sail out of sight
Anyway I called it ‘Gotta hurt somebody’- a rewriting of Dylan’s ‘You gonna serve somebody. When the ships have sailed, things turn sour.
You may remember Woodstock like Mr Browne’s pretenda
You may be sipping Kool Aid with some Bitter T defendas
You may be paying night school by kicking in some doors
You may be a nobody
mowing down the poor
You may wear a black shirt with the blessing of your Minister
You may be a guard at the camp that sees no visitors
You may smuggle people on a million dollar run
You may be killing cattle
‘how you say it’s supa fun’
You may be a husband who wants sex without consent
You may dip you little fingers in a beauty queen contestant
You may tell an anorexic woman that’s she fat
You may tell your boys
‘They all say yes, a facts a fact’
You gonna hurt somebody
Yes you know you gotta hurt somebody
High up in The Tower
or lurking by The Wall
You really hurt somebody
You may be a businessman selling rides to space
You may be a candidate with no skin in the race
You may be a Jihadist standing in his place
You may be The Donald Trump
You may be a fake
You may the Kaliphate burning kids in cages
You may be a politician talking ‘so outrageous’
You may be a trillionaire who wants a trillion more
You may be a lunatic
You may start the war
You gonna hurt somebody
Don’t you know you gotta hurt somebody
What’s the use of arms
if you can’t take them out on tour
You gonna burn some bodies
