Image of child crying at border wins World Press Photo award

https://www.pbs.org/newshour/arts/image-of-child-crying-at-border-wins-world-press-photo-award

AMSTERDAM (AP) — A photograph of a Honduran toddler crying as a U.S. Border Patrol officer pats down the child’s mother in Texas was named as the prestigious World Press Photo of the Year at a ceremony Thursday evening.

Getty Images photographer John Moore’s winning image shows 2-year-old Yanela Sanchez and her mother, Sandra Sanchez, after they were taken into custody last June 12, and it fueled debate about tough Trump administration policies that included separating families detained at the U.S.-Mexico border.

<insert extreme sarcasm icon here>

How do these ICE agents sleep at night? How do they look at heir own children at night with no twinge of guilt? How do they stop the sound of these totally freaked children from their minds? What do they do with their conscience when they learn of the kid who die in custody?

And the whole line of horror that Tre45son has visited on innocent people. My teenage son said “ this doesn’t happen anymore, right?” I reminded him of the protests we we attended this summer and he was really upset.

As for the ICE people? Don’t go to their FB page. They and their supporters have NO QUALMS about what they are doing.

I know it hurts. But when the candle is close to burning so low it may burn your hand, is when the light surrounded by darkness shines the brightest.

One of my favorite journalists (other than my daughter Holly Otterbein of course!) is Nellie Bly. She willing went under-cover directly into the darkness to expose the horrors of being imprisoned for supposed mental illness.

Your willingness to keep the light on the evils of today here in DU is important for us all to see.

I can understand why she is your favorite, Joe. Kudos.

Speaking of Nellie Bly. There was a special on TV about her recently. I knew about her...yet didn't know the depth of what she did. She near died for exposing the truth. It was made for TV, yet powerful in the telling.

Thanks.

However not bad, IMHO. Will grab the book when I have time.

The jerks who are doing this will be remembered with Heydrich, Himmler, Goring, Bormann, and of course, Hitler.

I don't believe in Hell. But if there is one. They all belong there.

A book by Andrew M. Greeley about WW 2, the attempted assassination of Hitler, the downfall and horror that took place. Written by the perspective of an Irish Ambassador. Ireland was neutral in the war. Irish Linen is the name of the book. It is a series of Nuala Anne books.

A mixture of fact and fiction.

Also while cleaning I came across my pictures of a Concentration camp taken with a Brownie camera by a 19 year old who helped liberate them.

He stayed in German houses, they shared what little they had with him and his fellow Soldiers, so happy they were there.

I wept and still weep every time I see it. I have a 3 year old granddaughter and those little red shoes are what made me cry. I just remember how proud my little granddaughter was when she got new shoes.

I remember posting on DU that I cannot and will never understand how anyone could work at a job that separates children from their parents and that if I had that sort of job, I would live under a bridge before I would follow those orders. I just could never do it. And yet there were actually women working in jobs like that also.

Photos are a powerful thing. Historically they have helped to turn the tide against inhumanity. Is this still true in America today? I'm not sure any longer. We have too many distractions and are a nation who cannot focus on any one thing for any length of time.

I'm glad that there are still people here on DU who care.
