Love in the time of narcissism

What we are lacking, perhaps, is a talented writer who could refract our era through the hallucinatory prism of his journalistic imagination and then reflect it back at us as a colorful fable, whose moral is written in some secret ink that (we hope) a wandering Melquíades will someday render visible to us again, finally empowering us to smack our foreheads and say, But of course! It is all so clear now! Or perhaps that is only part of what we lack -- and possibly not even the most important part. Or, perhaps, everything seems unclear only because we have decided to pretend we do not understand it

However it may be, there is no shortage of people whom we can properly describe as "a narcissist who cannot see beyond his own selfish interest" -- and the worldlines of such a surprising number of them intersect, that we should suspect we have fallen into some circular relativistic wormhole, that somehow produces a vast galaxy of copies of some evil prototype, with variations mostly suggesting the distortions of a funhouse mirror

Until rather recently, Julian Assange seemed to have set a world's record for having a large number of lawyers simultaneously spouting crazy and inconsistent noise -- but Donald Trump has recently become another contender for the record. Around these two, other narcissists orbit: the Manning-formerly-known-as-Bradley, for example, has circled Assange while denying doing so; while Roger Stone seems to have been in orbit around both at times. And as each new story comes into view, we gape, as if Melquíades had brought us ice for the first time
