Trump DoJ abandons defense of laws banning female genital mutilation

WTF? Neal Katyal was acting solicitor general under Obama and drafted the Special Counsel statute.

Just learned Trump DOJ has now abandoned its defense of the statute criminalizing, of all things, female genital mutilation. This is what happens when you torch your institutional responsibilities to defend statutes, and gut the traditional standard DOJ has applied in past admin

Response to Katyal:

What do you mean by DOJ abandoning its defense of the FGM statute? Do you mean they’re not appealing this decision, or something else?

response:

That is correct. The solicitor general has informed Rep. Nadler in a letter today that it will not appeal and will not defend the statute banning female genital mutilation. My god. What statute is next?

I wonder if the Trump administration is going to turn a blind eye to this sick and evil exercise of "religious freedom" in order to create a precedent for allowing similarly vicious exercises of "religious freedom" by conservative "Christians".

Would they cut off the tip of boys’ penises?

The anger I feel about this makes me feel like gagging.

Including me.
That circumcision is a form of male genital mutilation.

If it isn't your body then it's not your choice, leave it alone.

I’ve also read of puberty rituals among primitive people in the Amazon and the African bush.

It all seems really perverse.

That circumcision, (which OBTW removes more skin surface area than what's left on the entire penis), would be treated with a similar outrage as female genital mutilation or at least nearly as much.
But alas, that isn't the case.

How many times has he recounted, with sick, depraved glee his fantasies about women being tied up and beaten as they were smuggled across the border?

Second: Giving the green light to FGM allows him to point at Muslims and say "look at these very sick people!" and further vilify, ostracize, dehumanize and "other" Muslims in his unending quest to advance white supremacy.

Is there some voting bloc the Trump administration thinks they can win over? Because I immediately expect they might make a bold play against abortion rights after this precedent. Or they'll screw over transgender people.

to say that since the law was overturned, it means that Sharia Law is coming unless you vote to re-elect Trump - even though the judge was appointed by Reagan
