(31,261 posts)Kids learn values and respect for other people from their parents primarily. So yes, a person not showing those traits had inadequate parenting.
Ever been in a supermarket and seen some kids raising hell while kids of other parents are respectful of those around and near them? When you see that, pay attention to the parent, that might prove informing.

(16,319 posts)Don't have the same resources, education and assistance that others have, this is very evident when one compares parenting styles across socioeconomic levels.
Parenting even affects IQ, by up to one standard deviation, which works out to about 15 points on the wisc scale.

(31,261 posts)Even a single parent will have SOME free time to talk to a child about values and proper behavior. One issue is that many of those single parents were not taught those things to begin with, so they know no lessons to pass on.
Our society has made what appears to be a conscious decision that it would rather spend gads and gads of money on policing and prisons instead of a comparatively tiny amount by comparison money on early childhood nutrition and early learning, but thankfully, some places are getting wise.
Even in my red county there is a big push for PreK, kids are starting school at 3 years old, they are even there for introductory hours starting at 2. We can have more resources put into elementary and middle schools and provide better teacher pay, provide more guidance counselor sand give those people appropriate resources and hold them accountable in a manner that is free of political posturing. And get rid of the nonsense of having kids pay for school meals, every kid should get a free breakfast, a free lunch and a small afternoon snack, all containing the nutrients that young bodies and minds need.
I really believe that if kids get off solid in grades PreK-8, it becomes far more likely that they will succeed in grades 9-12.
