Police fined her when she kept reporting her ex-boyfriend for stalking. Then he killed her.
For months, Shana Grice had been telling police that her ex-boyfriend was stalking her.
The 19-year-old had caught him trailing her in her car and creeping into her bedroom after stealing a spare house key, breathing near her as she hid under her comforter and waited for him to leave, prosecutors later said. Then there were the seven phone calls from a blocked number in one day, with silence on the other end, according to the Argus.
Michael Lane was told to leave her alone but, ultimately, Grice was punished, fined for wasting the authorities time. Then in August 2016, Lane killed her cutting her throat in her home in England and setting her bedroom on fire, according to local news reports.
After an investigation from the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) into the police departments response, two officers one of whom has since retired will face disciplinary action next month, Sussex Police said Wednesday in a statement to The Washington Post. Another officer will face internal misconduct proceedings, and three others have received management advice and further training.
When we looked at the circumstances leading to Shanas murder, we felt we may not have done the very best we could, Sussex Police Assistant Chief Constable Nick May said in the statement.
Our then Deputy Chief Constable personally visited Shanas family to apologize on behalf of Sussex Police. Since then we have undertaken all their recommendations, thoroughly reviewed all aspects of how we deal with cases of stalking and harassment and have significantly improved our service to victims, he added.
Grice reported Lane to the police for stalking at least five times before her death and so had 13 other women, according to BBC News.

(36,101 posts)Women and male allies in that area -- Sussex? -- must get rid of the powers that be, AND the "independent" review SYSTEM that also "may not have done the very best" in reviewing repeated assaults by one perpetrator.
At least, with WOMEN running the police force, it won't be just a dick protection force.
Women must stop men from outflanking them institutionally.

(34,407 posts)that. I've seen some pretty despicably short sentences in the UK when domestic violence is involved.
On edit: Here, too, actually.

(1,035 posts)If you read the tag under the photo here, it says he got 25 years (Judges specify a minimum before parole eligibility according to your link).

Here's another article that says his minimum sentence is 25 years. Not enough given the circumstances of the crime.

(43 posts)Don't you know that they are the real police and hence real macho men who just can't be bothered with such sissy stuff like that ! They have to get ready for the terrorist attack that is coming at any moment and that they are the only ones who know about it!

(51,574 posts)They tend to put themselves in his shoes and give him the benefit of the doubt--but not the woman. Even when they are supposed to be protecting the woman. Even when 13 other women are reporting the same man for the same crime. It is fucking sickening.

(972 posts)If that was here you'd would be shit out of luck for any recourse as the courts have decided that the police are under no duty to protect an individual except in a very narrow set of circumstances when you are in custody of the police.
