Trump administration to slash USDA pork inspections, including tests for salmonella, E. coli

https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2019/4/3/1847489/-Trump-administration-to-slash-USDA-pork-inspections-including-tests-for-salmonella-E-coli

The Washington Post reports that the Trump administration plans to slash the number of federal inspectors in the nation's pork-processing plants by about 40 percent. The change, which could take place next month, is part of the Republican press to deregulate industry—including removing regulations previously put in place for public safety reasons.

The removed federal inspectors would be replaced by ... actually, by nothing.

Under the proposed new inspection system, the responsibility for identifying diseased and contaminated pork would be shared with plant employees, whose training would be at the discretion of plant owners. There would be no limits on slaughter-line speeds.
The "responsibility" for keeping contaminated meat out of the plant would be transferred to industry employees, but there are no hard requirements for how, or if, those workers will be trained to identify specific diseases or contaminants. There would similarly be no requirement that the plant operate at a speed that would even allow for plausible visual inspections, and no requirement that plants publicly disclose the results of their own disease testing, a move that could delay identification of new outbreaks.

Tests for salmonella and E. coli, two of the most common causes of serious food-borne illness, will seemingly no longer be required at all

Everything is intended to frame the government as inept, inefficient, untrustworthy, and unreliable. Once it becomes an accepted new norm that the government is too costly and useless, then who needs it any of the agencies and services, laws and regs that form the foundation of any civilized society? Whatever form of monolithic fascism arises to fill the vacuum will end the grand notion of our country.

We went vegan to lose weight, and we did. Eliminating the risk from eating unhealthy meat is a side benefit.

loose regulations may save them money in the short term, but mass outbreak of salmonella and E.coli from contaminated meat products will turn the general public away from consuming whatever is making people sick, therefore hurting their bottom line. I don't see how this is going to benefit anybody.

People will get sick and/or die, companies will get sued, demand for meat/pork will drop drastically. Maybe turning people against eating meat might not be such a bad thing after all. I am not a vegetarian, but if this kind of bullshit is going to become the norm, I would seriously consider becoming one.

This administration is a weird mixture of white nationalist and libertarian ideology. Libertarians honestly believe business can regulate themselves. Trump personally didn't make this decision. Some idiot he pulled from the campaign because they don't hire qualified people made this decision. Some idiot who has read Atlas Shrugged a few dozen times and is mediocre at best in all things in life that thinks he is being held back made this decision.

The results are rather predictable but we are unfortunately getting what we deserve.
