WOW Ohio names shelter pets its state animal

Ohio State might just have gotten itself the best mascot ever!

Ohio has named shelter pets its official state animal. And while Ohio already has a state bird (the northern cardinal), state mammal (the white-tailed deer) and state insect (the ladybug), the passage of Senate Bill 86 is crucial to raising awareness of all those homeless companion animals.

According to the ASPCA, around 6.5 million pets enter shelters each year in the United States. This tends to be split between 3.3 million dogs and 3.2 million cats. And while these statistics seem horrifying, this is actually an improvement. Back in 2011, shelter entry figures were as high as 7.2 million annually.
