Trump to speak later today. Graham just gave a propaganda speech. This is just the beginning. They will use this as a major campaign issue. They will convince many Americans it's the Democrats who are corrupt. It will work because most Americans are fucking idiots.

(32,640 posts)The American people have a right to know, they added.
With other congressional investigations of Mr. Trump swirling, the Democrats stance raised the prospect that they could undertake months, if not years, of scrutinizing federal prosecutors and top officials of the Justice Department a prospect that echoes Republicans yearslong pursuit of the federal officials who handled the investigation of Hillary Clintons use of a private email server. Taken together, the investigations still threaten to damage Mr. Trump politically.

Though AG William Barr's summary of special counsel Robert Mueller's report says Mueller concluded that President Trump's campaign did not collude with Russia, Congress and the Southern District of New York are still investigating the president. NBC News investigations reporter Tom Winter and Anne Marie McEvoy, former federal prosecutor for the Eastern District of NY and former attorney for Rick Gates, join Hallie Jackson to discuss the still ongoing investigations on President Trump.

Anything other than IMPEACH HIM NOW!!! even with the lack of compelling evidence or bipartisan support is "NOT going on the offensive," and will make some people VERY UPSET with Nancy Pelosi.
Despite plenty of evidence of many investigations by representatives, who know way more than some people about what actually makes a difference in terms of the finite resources of time and personnel in congress.
Because REASONS.

Question is, are there 5% or so "Independents" who know we'll be better off without trump, or other GOPer Prez, in 2020?

(630 posts)because they know America knows they're ideologically bankrupt. They've not put forth one idea to benefit America in 40 years. I don't believe it'll work; trump is still the same idiotic unpopular dolt he was last week, but he may get a temporary bump. We'll see.

(5,240 posts)that they are all going to overplay their hands. Too much cheering, gloating and boasting. Folks will get very tired of this soon. And rTump himself, will keep demanding new investigations into Hillary, etc that will also turn off the masses. So they'll have their fun for a little while and p.o. the rest of us.

(26,045 posts)I think the importance of having a solid policy platform can't be overstated, but it's not enough. Haven't year after year of polls showing voters backing Democratic positions, followed by elections in which those same voters elect the Republican, shown anything? It's almost as if "we like your ideas...we just don't like you."
And the reason is that, unless things are really, really bad (think 1932 or 2008) and people think their vote might seriously impact their own future, people don't vote for policies, they vote for myths.
From Reagan's "morning in America" onward, Republicans have mastered the art of myth and symbolism. It's always been "all that is good about (traditional) America versus the dark forces of international socialism that wants to destroy our society to build a Marxist totalitarian state" (sure, they never came out and said that, but that's what "tax-and-spend liberalism" meant). The myth they built allowed them to present a draft-dodger as a "true patriot," while a decorated war hero was "un-American." And it works, over and over, because people generally don't vote on issues, they vote on the myths they want to believe.
The symbolic power of the Mueller investigation, beforehand, was the assumption that it would uncover massive crimes, crimes against American sovereignty, by Trump, his family, and his closest cronies. That enabled us to create our own myth, positioning us as "the forces of light versus the forces of darkness," or, in another sense, "the true Americans against the Russian stooges." Now, unfortunately, that attempt at myth-forming has collapsed. In fact, what we're likely to see now is an attempt by Republicans to once again capture that myth for their own purposes -- by insisting on new investigations into Hillary, Obama, the "deep state," etc. for purportedly causing this "witch-hunt" in the first place, they're going to try to create a counter-narrative wherein they're the forces of light, and we're the forces of darkness.
Myths matter. That's the whole point of the voluminous campaign literature on the importance of "framing." If we can't create a compelling myth, an involving frame, to counter the current Republican "Make America Great Again" (which is itself merely another iteration of the standard Republican "things were much better in the past, and we need to return to the way it was then" ), we're going to lose, no matter how good we may be on "bread-and-butter issues." The only chance those will affect the 2020 race is if we fall into a deep recession in the coming year...which is not only dubious, but would be awful for us as well, and which, with Trump's predilection for strongman behavior, may well cause him to seize absolute power with another bogus "state of emergency."

(39,384 posts)Its what we should have been doing all along, instead of sitting back and waiting for the Mueller report. So now the conversation will be all about legalities instead of Trumps actual behavior as a corrupt Russian stooge. Weve won the gold medal for flat-footedness yet again.

(32,640 posts)We only got back House in January, then couldn't really do anything much for a month, because of this thing called a shutdown.
And then our "flat-footed" leadership, as you refer to it, hit the ground running with this list in hand, because they hadn't acually been "sitting back:"
President Trumps tax returns
Trump family businesses and whether they comply with the Constitution's emoluments clause, including the Chinese trademark grant to the Trump Organization
Trump's dealings with Russia, including the president's preparation for his meeting with Vladimir Putin
The payment to Stephanie Clifford a.k.a. Stormy Daniels
James Comey's firing
Trump's firing of U.S. attorneys
Trump's proposed transgender ban for the military
Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin's business dealings
White House staff's personal email use
Cabinet secretary travel, office expenses, and other misused perks
Discussion of classified information at Mar-a-Lago
Jared Kushner's ethics law compliance
Dismissal of members of the EPA board of scientific counselors
The travel ban
Family separation policy
Hurricane response in Puerto Rico
Election security and hacking attempts
White House security clearances

There was this testimony by this guy named Michael Cohen, and one of the flat-footed guys in leadership said that everyone that this guy mentioned in his testimony would be questioned.
And they hammered back with this last Friday, even before Barr had a chance to whitewash it:
Mueller report: House Democrats will continue separate investigations into Trump, Russia
https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2019/03/22/mueller-report-congress-oversight-investigations-trump/3061526002/
