EJ Montini, Arizona Republic
I spoke with Sen. Kyrsten Sinema Wednesday after having criticized
her for not responding to President Donald Trumps continued insults
of the late Sen. John McCain.
Sinemas office was putting together a statement from the senator,
but she was willing to chat about her reasoning beforehand.
Concerning her reluctance to respond to Trumps trashing of McCain she said,
This will probably not surprise you, because weve talked about this before.
I have a personal policy that I do not respond to the president tweets or statements.
I said I understood her policy in the general sense. But McCain was an Arizona senator.
On taking Trump bait
Arizonans know how I feel about John McCain, Sinema said, He is my hero.
I miss him every day
but what I dont like is that everyone in the country
keeps taking the bait that the president gives every day. I actually think it
is a real problem. Its a real problem. He enjoys this. And he does it every
single day. And everyone takes the bait every single day.

He plays with the media like a cat with a mouse. I'm listening to NPR doing it right now!
He should not be reported on unless it is an official presidential act. We shouldn't do it here either.
It will take some self-restraint, but it might help all of us feel better.
There is always something more important that he wants to distract us all from.

(3,396 posts)The second best response is to laugh at him. Anger just gives him what he wants.
Think about how America treated Hitler. They mockingly called him Adolph Schicklgruber, and sang songs like Der Fuehrers Face. If you must respond to Trump, thats the right response. He loves to be hated, but hates to be laughed at.

(24,329 posts)Her adding to it will not amplify the scorn, nor will it change his behavior.
He seems to actually enjoy it, largely because it plays into his, "See? Everyone is picking on me." act that he does quite well

(39,374 posts)I get it. But this is how the problem got out of hand in the first place. America is going to have to slay this monster on its own someday. You can't ignore him to death.
Maybe it comes down to the SDNY doing its thing post-presidency, but I'd rather not wait that long.

(11,949 posts)Not sure silence is the answer. But if every single Democratic office holder responded with the exact same response every time he did a crazy tweet it would soon make him a parity of himself.
Some thing like Donnie has a sad. Or you sound scared dude, are you scared?
Something like that and nothing more. Every time he tweeted. His head would explode.

(90,690 posts)As, I said in an earlier post, there are enough people responding. Her joining in will not result in any change in his behavior or what the public already thinks. It's not like they'll go, "OMG! Sen Sinema just said what about trump? Well, now I repudiate him."
Trump lives off the scorn, as do his supporters. I have seen few people who play the victim card as well as he does. There are enough people responding. It doesn't require everyone. As long as there's enough light shining on his terribleness she doesn't need to do so every time as well
