I am fairly certain that Donald Trump already knows he is making a false statement when he makes the claim about the electoral college. I am not sure why he lies about that and other issues that are easily proven false. However, I think the lie is a defense mechanism. He knows he lost the popular vote by three million votes. Also, he likely does not believe that illegal immigrants cost him the popular vote. Therefore, he constantly makes the false claim about the electoral collage as a way to make himself feel better about losing the popular vote.

Trump had a press conference, when he made that claim (again). One of the reporters pointed out that's incorrect, and said some specifics...Trump cut him off, saying something like, "Well, someone told me it was one of the biggest wins, so ....that's all I know. I'll check on that." That's very loosely how that went.
