Exclusive: Nancy Pelosi pushes back on Democratic critics of her impeachment stance

Eliza Collins, USA TODAY Published 3:33 p.m. ET March 19, 2019 | Updated 4:42 p.m. ET March 19, 2019

FERGUSON, Mo. – House Speaker Nancy Pelosi dismissed fellow Democrats who say she has set the bar too high for impeachment of President Donald Trump.

In an exclusive interview with USA TODAY, Pelosi said some House progressives have "wanted to impeach the president since the day he got elected."

"You're wasting your time, unless the evidence is so conclusive that the Republicans will understand," Pelosi, D-Calif., told USA TODAY. "Otherwise, it's a gift to the president. We take our eye off the ball."

The speaker said, instead of impeachment, Democrats needed to stay united in pushing through legislation that they campaigned on, such as addressing rising health-care costs and creating jobs.

Now, though she probably won’t say that.

I think timing is everything here. Continue conducting investigations and wait for the Mueller report.

Interested to see how many people here still think she's trying to trick Republicans into believing she's not interested in impeaching.

She's said it clear, multiple times now. Unless the evidence is so overwhelming that there's support from Republicans to impeach/convict, they aren't going to bring it up.

She's completely and totally wrong, but that is her opinion.

All of the people trying to claim she's saying something else are wrong.

If so, please explain how it hwlps to have the House vote to impeach Trump, only to have the Senate vote NOT to convict him.

Trump would be triumphant. “See? I told you there was no collusion. It’s a witch hunt,” he would say, and most of the public would agree with him.

I’m glad we have someone in charge who understands how the process works and considers all the likely consequences in making a plan.

It would weaken her position and put a heckuva lot of attention on T. That's why she said he's not worth it.

OTOH, not getting impeached by the Senate has nothing to do with being innocent of collusion -- only with the Senate voting against impeachment.
