But the outright bullshit lie that he's really a Republican doesn't help our party.

(18,644 posts)U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin is the only Democratic senator who did not co-sponsor an LGBT anti-discrimination bill.
The Register-Herald reports 44 Democratic U.S. senators and the two independent senators that caucus with them have signed onto Senate bill 788. The bill sponsored by U.S. Sen. Jeff Merkley of Oregon would add LGBT protections to the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Fair Housing Act of 1968.

(484 posts)But if you want a democrat to win in that area of the US, you NEED candidates like him. There should be no litmus test for the democratic party.

(14,565 posts)Hillary loses 68-26 and somehow two years later we win the senate race. That's all you need to know.
Hillary didn't win any state by close to that 42% margin. Her highest was 62-30 in Hawaii.
I live in WV and the number of Dump signs in 2016 was overwhelming. Like, holy shit there's one in every yard overwhelming. A construction business just outside of town still has his name in 5' tall letters painted on the side of their building.
People should just be glad Dems hold that seat.

(14,565 posts)Primarily in the small Davis/Thomas area while playing golf at Canaan Valley. Very peaceful and scenic but even when I first made that summer trek from Las Vegas in the early '90s I got the impression from locals that the state was far more conservative than I had been led to believe, or that presidential voting tendencies would indicate.
It's just too bad the trend didn't hold on for one more cycle to push Al Gore over the top.

(11,949 posts)The senate is going to be tough for us even in 20. West Virginia will not elect a social democrat. Manchin faced a primary challenge by a more liberal Democrats and won handily. Its either him or a republican who will never vote with us and would never vote as Schumer or any democrat as Majority Leader.
To win in 20 we will need several more like him. Do I love it. Of course not. But I would gladly trade my SOB senators Rubio or Skeletor for him in a heartbeat. And spot you $1000 dollars!
Until we realize that all the Social Democratic ideas we have, while maybe supported by a majority of Americans, are not supported by a majority of states, we will win nothing. Because the power of the senate is about the states.
Run on affordable healthcare for all Americans. And point out how many middle class Americans file bankruptcy because of medical bills. Most people know such people. We can win.
Figure out the details after we have control. Its how it has always been done.

(11,949 posts)A person lives in an urban Blue area their whole life, everyone you know agrees with you and it is easy to assume your region reflects every region. Or even your peer group in a red state. And then explain the continuing losses in other regions on nefarious forces. Human nature.
And even more difficult is asking people to temper their true beliefs and accept something less. As long as I live in Florida, which I plan to my entire life, I will understand the politics of the possible. Not the perfect. We could have won the governorship, in my opinion, had Graham been our candidate. But we nominated a very liberal candidate who actually aligned better with my beliefs than Graham did. But we lost and got nothing. But Gillum could have won. Bernie held a much publicized rally for him in the primary which honestly did not win him the nomination. He was going to win that anyway. But it killed him in the general. He was tied to a socialist and could not publicly untie himself. I saw the whole thing play out. Who in their right mind thought having a socialist from Vermont come rally for a candidate in Florida was a good idea?
So you will not be surprised to know I hope Biden is our candidate. Do I love everything about him? Of course not. But live where I do and you eventually learn its all about winning!

(10,433 posts)I don't like him much either. I'm about as liberal as it gets, but if I lived in a rightwing craphole like WV, I'd vote for him because he's still better than the piece of shit republicon running against him.
His voting percentage isn't great, but it's better than the ZERO percent that a teabagger Senator would have.
Manchin at least gives a necessary number to the caucus. I can give him a pass to an extent because that's as good as can be expected in WV at this time. Elsewhere, no.
