Facebook removed 1.5m copies of the video of the New Zealand terrorist attack in the first 24 hours after Friday’s shootings, highlighting the enormous challenge involved in keeping violent and offensive material off social networks.

New Zealand’s prime minister, Jacinda Ardern, has said she will seek talks with Facebook on its efforts to stop circulation of the video. The social network’s livestreaming system was rolled out to all users as Facebook Live in 2016 and has increasingly become known for a series of murders and suicides broadcast on the system.

1. I dont think they should remove the livestream feature

It's used very effectively by activists during protests to document police violence. Lots of citizens journalists are bringing raw unfiltered events to people. If facebook wants to stop horrifying stuff, they need to invest in better algorithms or hire more people. Alternatively they could maybe put it on a delay like say 1 minute to give tunes to algorithms or humans to catch it. That's what they do on live TV sometimes.

At some point Americans are going to have to sacrifice something to turn round the abuse. Turn it off. Delete it. Find alternatives. Respect and protect your country.
