I have to side with Fox on outing the Seal/Author
If it wasn't Fox news I think folks would have an easier time seeing the situation clearly.
This man has no reasonable expectation of privacy. He is a controversial and newsworthy figure by choice. Some members of his team consider him a traitor. Depending on the contents of the book he may well be a criminal.
If you want to enjoy the anonymity of being a Navy Seal involved in classified operations your first step might be to not write a tell-all book about classified Seal operations.
His name is newsnot as one of the men who killed Bin Laden but as the man who is exposing things about the operation for his own profit and doing so outside the normal channels.
If you work for the CIA, for instance, and you then write a book you tell the CIA "Hey, I am writing a book" and the CIA reviews the manuscript to make sure you are not saying anything classified.
This guy has not cleared his book through anyone. He's a rogue seal cashing in.
I support his right to write a book because I am very strong on the 1st Amendment. No prior restraint. (Though he could face charges after the fact depending on the contents.)
And that same strong view of the 1st Amendment tells me that Fox is free to name someone who is a controversial figure in the news because he is doing something highly questionable.
Once you write a book, anonymously or not, you have no reasonable expectation of privacy.
