NYC To Dish Out 'Meatless Monday' Lunches At All Public Schools

New York City public schools, the country’s largest school system, will enforce a “meatless Monday” in its student lunches beginning this fall in an effort to improve health and curb environmental effects, the city announced.

“People are going to look at this, and they’re going to start to emulate what the New York City schools are doing,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said at a press conference on Monday.

The initiative, which will impact 1,800 schools, follows a successful pilot program in Brooklyn involving 15 schools last year, the mayor said.

“We had such overwhelmingly positive feedback that we decided this was the right thing to do,” said school chancellor Richard A. Carranza.

The program is one of several initiatives undertaken by the school system to improve students’ eating habits. Back in 2017, it began offering free breakfasts and lunches to all of its students, regardless of their financial need. During the summer months, the city also offers free breakfast and lunch to any New Yorker under the age of 18 through its Summer Meals program.

but usually the stuff that stickers with kids is repetition and what they learn at home. I taught my first graders how to make healthy food choices and taught them about food and nutrition all year long. We would read the breakfast and lunch menus and vote thumbs up or down for "healthy" or "unhealthy" depending on the fat and sugar contents (this included salad bar choices too). I was the only teacher who stood with her students every day making sure they put healthy choices on their tray. At recess I only allowed healthy snacks. When we had earned enough reward points we had a "Healthy Snack Party".

When I would see the same students after they moved onto the next grades I could see that their eating habits were almost all back to unhealthy choices. Also, at parent/teacher conferences some of the parents would tell me that providing healthy food for their kids at home was too expensive and takes too much time. Oh well, I tried.
