Abortions by mail: the FDA is going after online pill providers

The agency sent warning letters to two web retailers selling the medical abortion pills misoprostol and mifepristone.

The US Food and Drug Administration is cracking down on organizations that sell medical abortion pills over the internet.

In a warning letter released Tuesday, the agency requested that the online abortion pill provider AidAccess.org immediately stop selling unapproved versions of the abortion drugs mifepristone and misoprostol and respond to FDA concerns within 15 working days outlining how it will correct its regulatory violations.

“Failure to [do so] may result in FDA regulatory action, including seizure or injunction, without further notice,” an agency spokesperson told Vox.

The FDA also issued a warning letter to Rablon, an online pharmacy network that includes at least 87 websites, such as AbortionPillRx.com and AbortPregnancy.com, directly selling mifepristone and misoprostol to patients.

Legal versions of mifepristone and misoprostol have been available to patients in the US since 2000 — but patients can’t just get them at any pharmacy. The drugs are only given out by certified health care providers in a doctor’s office, clinic, or hospital. The providers need to sign a waiver that they’ll ensure patients have access to a surgical abortion or emergency care if anything goes wrong — part of an FDA risk mitigation program called REMS, which is common to higher-risk medications.

If they are legal in the US then why is the FDA trying to stop on line sales? More Republican misogyny? First close down all the clinics, then stop the pill sales? And arrest women who use them? This is totally insane. 2020 can't come too soon!

French on. Two Never Trumpers, but very much conservative and anti abortion (French it appears more so). It's worth a listen to understand the "rational" Republicans. There was no Democratic counterbalance to them, so they were letting it all hang out. Interesting that French thinks the current Republican Party stormtrooping at hijacking the Judgeships etc to get Roe overturned, would backfire, and the long term way was to appeal to hearts and minds.

What had me nearly banging my head against the steering wheel, is that the likes of those two don't give a shit about the child once it's born. If they stop an abortion, that's a win to them and they move onto the next one. Nowhere did they mention better ways to stop abortions like backing campaigns for safe sex information for teens, free contraception, raising people's living standards so they can afford to have the baby etc.

if they are so anti-abortion as they SAY they are, wouldn't they be putting a Planned Parenthood on every street corner so women can have access to low cost contraception? Because using contraception greatly lowers the need for abortion???? This never seems to penetrate their hard heads.

5. You need to remember that a good part of this is to keep women "in their place."

If the woman is pregnant then there is no reason to let her work or go anywhere and their control over her is complete.
