Jaguar won't be euthanized after zoo attack on selfie-taking Arizona woman, officials say

A jaguar won’t be punished for a woman whose selfie went horribly wrong.

The jaguar that attacked an Arizona woman -- who jumped a barrier to snap a selfie with the feline -- will not be euthanized, zoo officials said Sunday.

Wildlife World Zoo officials told social media users the jaguar “won’t be put down” after a woman in her 30s suffered injuries to her arm following the Saturday incident. The woman jumped a barrier at the Litchfield Park zoo and reached out to take a selfie when the big cat dug her claws into the visitor’s hand.

“We can promise you nothing will happen to our jaguar. She’s a wild animal and there were proper barriers in place to keep our guests safe- not a wild animals fault when barriers are crossed. Still sending prayers to her and her family,” Wildlife World Zoo officials tweeted Sunday.

I hope the woman recovers but for God sakes don't be an idiot.

She's lucky it was only a clawing. Jaguars have the strongest bite of any cat.

about 15 years ago and it was just me and the cat and i thought 2 things, kitty wanted to kill me and
how "ripped up" the tiger was. His/her muscle in the back legs just rippled.

I don't think the woman sustained any damage that will prevent her from breeding. Technically, anyway.

By definition a Darwin award winner is someone who takes themselves out of the breeding pool. By death or destruction of reproductive capability.

Nearly though. She was lucky.

that just kept timing a jump she never took. I always got the sinking suspicion that she could make it if she tried.

As far as barriers go, I was shocked in Silver Springs (a park in Ocala) that allowed patrons to get right up to the wire on big cat (I am not sure what was going on with the barriers - if I did something wrong by bypassing one but I would never do that intentionally).

Back again at the Monroe Zoo. They have a happy hippo that had its front barrier down one time we were in there. You could actually put your hand into the enclosure. The barrier was back up the next time we were there. Again somewhat amazing. Of course I didn't put my hand up there. The hippo always seemed happy though.

The old Predator World in Branson was something to behold. I think it was extremely dangerous, but it is the weirdest place my family has ever been. Of all the things we have done, it is the most memorable. It was behind an old gas station when we went. We went because of a coupon in a coupon book.

That cat did nothing wrong. I did wildlife rehab thirty plus years ago. We had a sanctuary and a wonderful mountain lion some fool thought he could raise (tip: when you get a mountain lion cub it grows into a MOUNTAIN LION, YOU IDIOT!)

She was a lovely, confused critter who was sweet as could be and A MOUNTAIN LION! We fed her through a sort of air lock so we could put food in and close it and then open her side. One day I was negligent and didn’t pull my hand back before being certain she couldn’t get a paw in the other side and I got a hole punched through my hand. I still have a little scar. She was doing nothin at all wrong. A cat will grab at things close enough to grab. The woman was a fool. I hope she was treated well and with plenty of antibiotics because cat wounds get infected like nothing else.

I turn a corner, open a door and there right in front of me, loose and walking in my direction is A FREAKING MOUNTAIN LION!!

Diablo was his name and he belonged to an animal trainer friend of the family's. He let me pet him without my being mauled. That whole scene was really pretty stupid but it was back in the 60's and we all survived.

There was a man (You can STILL find stuff about him online though I thinks he's dead. Michael Blyman) who wanted me to work for him, but he was both an amazing expert on big cats and kind of nuts. But tigers are pretty poor mothers in captivity and so people would foster the babies until they were old enough to go into facilities. There was nothing like it. They were sweet as could be little kittens who weighed fifty pounds by the time they left and thought there was nothing in the world funnier than to bite you right in the ass.

It was a fun time--late 70's, early 80s, but a lot of maverick wildlife work was done that would probably have a whole lot more regulation now.

I'm assuming the barrier marks a safe distance from the cage so that the animal can't catch someone by reaching their paw out through the cage.

That is one beautiful animal in the photo. I hope the zoo doesn't "correct" by making smaller cage mesh. God, why do people have to be so stupid? But at least she apologized.

Wild jaguars have finely honed hunting and people avoidance skills.

Most wild jaguars are largely invisible to us humans.

Ignorant people are extremely dangerous, deadlier than the fallout of nuclear accidents and open air nuclear weapons testing.

A zoo jaguar might not appreciate that.
