(2 x 2) + (2 x 2) + 5 = 13

one guy is also five, and one scarf is two. Answer is 20. But it’s not just simple algebraic substitution, it’s a too cute test of your powers of observation, as one doesn’t notice the change and reads one shoe as shoes, one scarf as scarfs and one doesn’t notice the change to multiplication from addition.

I'm usually shitty at this, but the pair of shoes must each be 10, so the guy is 5, the scarves are 4, so one shoe is 5, 1 guy is 5 and 1 scarf is 2. OOOOPS - on edit. The total of the shoe and guy are multiplied by the scarf so it must be 20. Editing again - what's the guy in the last row got in his hands and does it count? Probably isn't 20. Time to go back to crossword puzzles. LOL.

Each shoe is worth 5, each guy is worth 5, and each tie is worth 2, so.....

Since multiplication is done as one calculation where addition and subtraction are done individually (try an equation in Excel to check), the guy with two ties and two shoes is 19, which times 2 is 38, and then plus 5 for the first shoe would make 43.

But it's after midnight here, so I'm claiming fatigue if I missed something.

If there's ties in his hands - can't tell from the image exactly.. then it's s 23

Shoe = 5
Tie = 2
Man = 5

5+ (5 X 2) = 15 or

5 + (5+4) X 2 = 23

A pair of shoes may be 10, but we've not defined the value of a single shoe. Especially because individual shoes are not usually identical. The left shoe could be 4 and the right shoe 6. Or the value of a single shoe could be 1 and the second shoe 9. In reality, the value of a single shoe isn't anything close to the value of half a pair of shoes. What would anyone do with just one shoe?

Nor is the value of a single tie or the value of the man wearing a pair of shoes and holding ties defined.

If you want to make some common but mathematically unsupported assumptions, then the guy wearing shoes and holding ties is 19 (5 for man, 4 for ties, 10 for shoes) times 2 is 38, plus 5 for one shoe = 43.

But the real answer is "undefined".

Calculated thus:
3 pairs of shoes = 30
Therefore, 1 pair of shoes must = 10
Therefore, 1 shoe must = 5

1 guy + 1 guy + 1 pair of shoes = 20;
1 pair of shoes = 10
Therefore, 1 guy + 1 guy must = 10
Therefore, 1 guy must = 5

1 pair of wristbands (?) + 1 pair of wristbands
+ 1 guy = 13
Given that 1 guy = 5
Therefore, 2 pairs of wristbands must = 8
Therefore, 1 pair of wristbands must = 4
Therefore, 1 wristband must = 2

Since multiplication must occur FIRST in an algebraic equation:
1 guy worth 5 appears to be wearing 1 pair of wristbands worth 4 AND 1 pair of shoes worth 10
Therefore, 1 guy worth 5 + 1 pair of wristbands worth 4 + 1 pair of shoes worth 10 = 19
Therefore, 19 X 1 wristband worth 2 = 38 (concluding the multiplication aspect)
1 shoe worth 5 + 38 = 43
Therefore, the final answer = 43

Edit

1. 3 pairs of shoes = 30, 10 per pair so 5 per shoe.
2. 2 men and a pair of shoes, remove the pair and you're left with 10/2, so 5 per man.
3. 2 sets of ribbions and a man, remove 5 and you're left with 8/2, 4 per set, so 2 per ribbon.
4. And the difficult one, a man wearing shoes with ribbons on his hands. I'm assuming that everything he's wearing would be treated as in parentheses so thats 5, plus a pair of shoes, plus a set of ribbons for 19, times a ribbon to 38 plus a leftover shoe to get 43.

Though ignoring oop (But still assuming that the 'clothed' man would still count as one value) you'd get 48.
