Under socialism you will only get a straw if you want one, whereas under good freedom straws are mandatory.

At restaurant tonight waitress asks if we want straws. Says she has to ask now in fear of THE STRAW POLICE. Welcome to Socialism in California!

(6,622 posts)Thats what I bought for our office, and theyre great! Theyre wide enough that they actually STIR, unlike the little plastic straws, and, of course, theyre not plastic!
(My predecessor at my office had gotten plastic cocktail straws to use as coffee stirrers. They promptly melt and turn floppy in hot coffee. Gross. )

(58,685 posts)but when driving, I like the convenience of a straw. I can sip easily without spilling. The sippy cup lids are OK, but it always seems I hit a bump when sipping those and get a surge of hot coffee. Not good.
But like I said. If they kill straws, I'll live.
Oh, and how fucking hot is the coffee there, to melt plastic straws? I routinely drink Americano espresso and it doesn't melt the straws.

(6,622 posts)I think its that the straws are THAT CHEAP. I use silicone straws when Im in a straw kind of mood.

I moved to the OC in May 1985. SoCal had a huge smog problem and regulations were still in early stages. At that time I worked in Irvine, about five to seven miles north are the Tustin foothills, that you could rarely see from the office. About 25 miles NE there is a 5500 ft mountain, (Saddleback) that I never saw until December!
At the time all of the old guys would rail against the regulations, damn socialists, moonbeam turning us into commies, all the jobs are going to leave SoCal, we are going to have a mass population exodus, and on.
It is now rare not to see Saddleback from Irvine, from maybe 30 days a year in 1985 to under 30 days that air quality blocks them in 2019. In addition the population of OC increased from 2 to 3 million in that time frame
When I hear the latest Socialism rants, everyone will be leaving CA rants from guys my age who grew up in SoCal, I always tell the story about my first year experience in the OC. Amazing part is they all agree with my memories yet have a hard time seeing how ignorant the current comments are when put in historical events they witnessed.

(8,419 posts)The only time we see that now is if there is a brush fire on Saddleback. We had one early this year. The Holy fire was actually started in Holy Jim Canyon, not far from Cooks Corner.
The base is in the process of being developed. The north end off Irvine Blvd is almost filled in with houses, as is the west end of the base.

(22,976 posts)I mean, WTF do drinking-straw laws have to do with socialism of any kind? Is it socialistic to NOT want to add to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, a massive accumulation of plastic trash floating halfway between Hawaii and California, which now comprises more than 600,000 square miles (twice the size of Texas)?
Obviously, The Rs are going to scream socialism! at every turn between now and the 2020 election. Its past time to start calling them out as fascists (yes, USE the f word, damn it) who have no respect for the rule of law, human decency, fiscal responsibility, our long-standing allies, and democracy itself.

(9,350 posts)I highly doubt this played out the way Devin Nunes claims. Likely she asked if he and his party wanted straws, he asked why she asked the question, and she told him they are told to ask in an effort to reduce the number of straws used. I highly doubt that she expressed any fear of her bosses, or anyone who is pushing to ban straws. If she did express fear, I assume she did it in an effort to appease Nunes in order to get a bigger tip.
