In spite of everything, its not going to be enough to expect voters to vote against Trump. We have to give them a reason to vote FOR Democrats.
Lets not fuck this up, OK?
Just a thought.

(7,820 posts)They will cheat, and the sad fact is Trump still has enough support that re-election is not inconceivable. We need him out, and need to regain the Senate if we have any hope of repairing the damage thats being done. Cautiously optimistic is my feeling right now. Its doable... but we need to be prepared to work for it.

(66,386 posts)We can't take anything for granted.
Get out and vote.
Encourage others to vote.
Drive people to the polls.
And whatever the hell we do, let's not throw shade on the eventual Dem nominee, whomever it turns out to be. The Susan Sarandons of the electorate are a lost cause. If we can't get them to vote for the Democratic candidate, let's at least not validate their fecklessness by staying home on Election Day.

(12,265 posts)I kept saying last time, we don't have this in the bag, the polls could be wrong, and look what happened. Democrats are notorious for staying home from the polls. It's raining, we are way ahead and I have things to do excuses. No excuses, we need to vote ourselves, make sure our neighbors and friends are voting. GOTV GOTV GOTV.

(18,125 posts)There are many who will vote republican no matter who the candidate is, just because they've always voted republican. And to be honest, the same is true for Democrats. I think there are actually very few people who can swing either way and fewer still are republicans who will switch because they don't like trump. I know that's hard to imagine because we hate him so.
I still think Democrats will win, about 50% to about 48% (2% will vote for fringe candidates). Not exactly a landslide. The Electoral College will be close too because of the bias towards conservative states.

(17,600 posts)Don't let the foot off the gas pedal.
Get Democratic voters into the mindset to vote in EVERY election.
Then, as you said, give them something to vote FOR.
But getting them just to show up in the first place is key.

(22,976 posts)Take NOTHING for granted, as the Trumpists will say/do anything (even break laws) to remain in power.
America is coming apart at the seams already. It wont survive another term under 45, or any other Republican, for that matter. EVERYTHING, including the future of our democracy, is at stake.
Big thanks, MrScorpio

(145,313 posts)We have to nominate an electable candidate. Trump can easily win if we nominate a weak candidate.

(145,313 posts)I tend to agree with Charlie Cook. We need to run a candidate who can beat trump https://cookpolitical.com/analysis/national/national-politics/2020-path-democrats-shouldnt-take
But when these same voters were asked how they felt about voting for someone who was a socialist, 43 percent said very uncomfortable and another 29 percent have some reservations. Just 4 percent were enthusiastic and 21 percent comfortable. Among all adults, 6 percent viewed socialism very positively, 12 percent somewhat positively, 27 percent neutrally, 14 percent somewhat negatively and 36 percent very negatively. According to First Read, the morning newsletter published by NBC Newss political unit, just 9 percent of independents and 13 percent of moderates view socialism favorably, a flashing red light for Democrats contemplating embracing that approach.
It is very clear, listening to Trump as well as to GOP strategists, that they are building up democratic socialism as the straw man to knock down in this campaign. Their goal obviously is to make electing a Democratic president an unacceptable alternative to Trump. So it basically comes down to whether Democrats want this election to be about Trump or about embarking on a new and different philosophical direction. One of those paths seems to be very risky.
I want to run a candidate who is electable. Beating trump is the most important thing
