like-minded friends in purely social situations?
I find no one really wants to broach it. It's like bringing something ugly into the event.
That's why DU = my safe spot. 😁

(115,732 posts)Even in some classes I'm taking we rant among ourselves. I take an art class (we rant while painting), voice lessons (I rant with my instructor), and a foreign language class (we rant before, during and after the class when we're not actually studying). I also belong to a gardening group and we sometimes get going about environmental issues. It's constant. I watch Netflix and cat videos to get away from it.

(7,847 posts)The safest topics are : pets, food, vacations, young children.
It used to be that pro sports was a safe topic. I'm out of that loop. Perhaps others can jump in.
In my previous employer, law enforcement was a popular topic because we see all kinds of bad drivers and neighborhoods. Also, 2 of my co-workers had relatives in Wisconsin law enforcement. Using these as a springboard, additional topics arose such as human trafficking, jaywalking at the University of Wisconsin - Madison, road construction and financing thereof.
One of my co-workers codename "Yvonne", having way more money than the rest of us, was brave enough to bring up topics with Trump's name.
Overall, I tend to mention Trump only with people I know are clearly Blue Wave. I'm sure this will change a bit month by month.

(757 posts)separating children is very harmful. Whoa. Wasn't ready for the attack justifying caging children. Didn't realize what the Fox talking points were and the rationalizations to protect their bias. Yikes.
Now, I just assume they may be on the trump turnip truck, so I keep it strictly about the weather.

(2,343 posts)Too many are too touchy when in mixed politics company . I have dear friends and family who I dont agree with politicaly, and Ive just decided I value the relationship more than a good political tussle.

(53,410 posts)Its the feeling of helplessness that makes them like that. I know of very few people who will stand and fight for others or themselves. The ones who do are always doing it in one way or another.
Most people just want to live their lives.

I can read and watch and post stuff about politics for hours, I would run off family and friends trying to do that in person or on the phone

(90,714 posts)Trump has unleashed a dangerous amount of sheer crazy.
I am fortunate, though, that my BIL and SIL who live here are likeminded, as are their two closest friends. As a consequence, we can devote 15 minutes or so to venting and ohmy godding in a safe space, and then just drop it and do something more pleasant among ourselves.

(657 posts)interested in politics but hates Trump so much (she and her husband, who are both extremely devout Christians, started talking about how much they despised him very early in 2016) she talks about what's going on as much as I do...we even watched the Comey and Cohen hearings together.
I'm pretty sure she has voted for Republicans previously, but she voted for Obama twice.
