I hold him in the same reverence as the martyred Kennedy brothers, Abraham Lincoln, and Dr. King and am not ashamed to say so. He was the fundamentally most decent man to ever hold that office.

I felt a heck of a lot safer. Like i did in the 90's really. The 90's were overall good for America. PLUS Clinton created a surplus....imagine THAT if you can. I remember it well.
Pres Obama was a sight for sore eyes everytime I saw him and Mrs. O.
I'm not a practicing Christian but, I seem to remember somewhere a colloqiol? question..."When Jesus returns (ahem) what will he look like and how will we recognize him.?" meaning, be good to people in general bc you never know if it's the Big J. Pres obama was SUCH a fine representative for all of us. The world was SO proud of us. Rightfully so.
Democrats pick people who govern everybody fairly, even the gop. The gop elect people, to abolish abortion and pump up corporations that are destroying our land.

(51,571 posts)It is inexcusable to say the only difference between Obama and Trump policy is "polish." Obama never instituted a Muslim ban. Obama did not lie 8,000 times in 2 years. Obama did not forsake our allies and cozy up to murderous dictators. Obama did not engage in nepotism to staff his White House. Obama did not seek to profit from the presidency.
Anyone who says there is no substantive difference between Obama and Trump has just killed their credibility.
Cha
(297,312 posts)credibility in one fell swoop, SunSeeker.
It's a gaslit travesty to say that about President Obama.. and then evidently she's saying it was "distorted" which is proven not to be the case..

(4,532 posts)I don't think she intended to suggest that Obama and Rumps policies were the same. However, I think she was addressing the unfortunate fact that Immigration Policy under Pres Obama's administration was quite harsh and the drone program should be criticized.

(297,312 posts)Democrats didnt abandon Omar over her comments about Israel. Her criticism of Barack Obama is another matter.
Omar says the hope and change offered by Barack Obama was a mirage. Recalling the caging of kids at the U.S.-Mexico border and the droning of countries around the world on Obamas watch, she argues that the Democratic president operated within the same fundamentally broken framework as his Republican successor.
We cant be only upset with Trump . . . His policies are bad, but many of the people who came before him also had really bad policies. They just were more polished than he was,
Omar says. And thats not what we should be looking for anymore. We dont want anybody to get away with murder because they are polished. We want to recognize the actual policies that are behind the pretty face and the smile.

(4,532 posts)The truth is that innocent civilians, hundreds, were killed in drone strikes during Obama's terms. Do I think Obama ever intended for any innocent person to be killed by drone strikes? Absolutely not. But they were killed as a result nonetheless and that's a fact. I place the blame on the CIA's ruthlessness (until 2016) rather than Obama. A major differentiator of Rump from Obama's drone programs is that Obama made a real effort to avoid civilian casualties. Trump on the other hand (as revealed by intelligence leaks) WANTS more civilian deaths as a result of strikes. On immigration policy, no, Obama did not separate families and and cage children, no way. However, Omar's intention in criticizing Obama era immigration policy is probably right minded as the administrations policies were extremely harsh, probably because of POTUS 44's inclination toward bipartisanship and "compromise".

(2,412 posts)Remember a smear campaign is ramping up against Rep. Omar. I am keeping an open mind. Obamas Iran Nuclear Agreement was a triumph of diplomacy. At the same time he did not end the wars on the Middle East. He represented us well and mostly I will never ever forget my joy at seeing little Black kids lining his innagural parade with their faces shining with hope. But about going along with Neocon foreign policy, he could have been more daring in opposing them. Remember the Democratic Party needs to be a BIG tent.

I actually was able to listen to one of them and asked questions when on a Convention where he spoke.
I do not admire the Bush family. Old man Bush was involved in all kinds of dirty tricks, and his Son lied us into an 18 year war.
I see Congress is trying to end the War Power. Bush lied to Congress when he asked for it. I also remember Hillarys speech about how hard that vote was. The President promised to use war as a last resort and we have to trust the President! We know how that lie went.

(19,565 posts)I fail to understand the need to castigate our good ones just because they weren't 100% perfect in all ways to all people. Life, and by extension humans, are not perfect and never will be. Also, our big tent means we have to be more tolerant of our leaders not being able to mirror our idealized beliefs, and views at all times.
We're still more alike than we are different, and likening Obama to Trump is a ridiculous comparison. It truly is an apples and oranges moment.

(4,066 posts)I suspect HE's not entirely happy with everything he did or had to do in office.
I noticed he took a sharp turn on a few things after he was sworn in. There is a huge difference between a campaign and the reality of office. It was pretty clear to me that Obama actually listened to his intel people and the senior career people in addition to his political appointees. He carried on Bush-era programs and deportations that I thought he would stop when he became President.
I suspect that once he was sworn in and fully briefed the landscape changed and he felt it was in the best interest of the nation to do those things. Does that make him the same sort of "murderer" as Bush-Cheney? Yes and no.
Obama strikes me as a man who would never want to be considered a martyr.
I whole-heartedly agree with your statement: He was the fundamentally most decent man to ever hold that office.
DemocratSinceBirth
(99,710 posts)I didn't say President Obama was a martyr. A martyr is someone who suffers or dies for his or her beliefs. John and Robert Kennedy took a bullet in their heads for their beliefs as did Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King. Thankfully Barack Obama is still with us and will be with us for a very long time.

(507 posts)I've now lived 58 years, and to my knowledge, never has a President in my lifetime, ever been without personal/political scandal while in Office. Yes, there were a few hiccups along the way, but PBO was always first to acknowledge that mistake, take responsibility and do everything in his power as President to remedy the situation. I will go to my deathbed remembering PBO singing at the funeral for the Charleston Mass Murder victims. I still cry. The excuse of a 'president' illegally occupying 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, undoubtedly doesn't even begin to know the words to Amazing Grace, much less even begin to sing it out loud. So proud that I was able to see our Nation's first Black President. Even though kkkonservatives did everything in their power to single him out on a daily basis, as well, do their best to bring him down, he persevered and proved who was the better man.
