Your words "otherwise blameless life" uttered to a man who spent decades propping up brutal strongmen around the world before helping to interfere with our own elections are now your complete legacy as a jurist.
That's the only thing people will ever remember you for.
Those three words.

(58,785 posts)But there is an explanation.
Our nation as a whole shifted to the right (more conservative) 40 years ago. People'd gotten tired of the liberal-dominated New Deal era and looked for "change." And with it, new majorities elected conservatives to control a majority of our governments. And it's been downhill ever since.
Not coincidentally, our national wealth had started exploding due to technological advances, but most of it was increasingly channeled into the pockets of the new centimillionaire and billionaire classes that exploded into being with it. Many conservatives among them have since been using their tremendous power to grow and entrench more conservative, more anti-regulation, more anti-democracy, more corrupt government like a cancer.
The internet is not conservative, but ruthless conservatives have done a fantastic job of turning it into a huge new weapon and aiming it at democracies around the planet, including ours.
Last, also not coincidentally at all, when strong conservative Reagan was elected strong conservative T.S. Ellis was given a lifetime appointment to one of the courts where he could be most useful in helping protect affluent white collar criminals from being treated like criminals.
And here we are. Strong conservatives are proven in this, as in other, eras to be unfit to run nations, unless the goal is to run them into the ground. Thanks mainly to manipulations by the ultrawealthy, and too many feckless citizens, liberals and other opponents of corrupt government have never gotten enough power for long enough since to reverse that tide.
Anyway, that's my explanation for what's wrong with our government. Or stated from a different point of view, not enough of US voted to stop conservatives from doing their best to destroy a really good thing.
605 days to our next chance. Our HR 1 bill awaits.

(11,885 posts)Who killed and brutalized people in different area's of the world? This judge calls his life blameless? He just increased the already huge turnout to vote into an even larger group now from this. Wonder if he was another Acosta , and promised a position for this, or threatened.

(6,007 posts)They get on the soapbox for a while and pontificate about how horrible it is. . But is it fixed? I am tired of hearing all the fake outrage. FIX IT, those of you in power!
ehrnst
(32,640 posts)And what "fake outrage" are you referring to?
I've seen action, and heard real outrage on the part of Democratic leaders.

(6,007 posts)Like that affluenza kid -- he killed someone with his car but he was rich so, oh well, how can he be expected to know better?
And who is supposed to "fix" it? Well, I think our legal system isn't set in stone, right? There have been changes made in the past. It's about time to make some changes.
The Democratic leader sound outraged, but when was the last time they made changes to the judicial system? What is the point of Democratic outrage if it doesn't lead to changes and reform?
Do you think we are helpless, at the mercy of the system as it is right now? That would be sad if there were no chance for EVOLUTION and GROWTH.

(32,640 posts)What changes to the judicial system can Democrats make - other than nominating judges, which POTUS does, and our POTUS isn't a Democrat... Can you specify what changes to "the judical system" you are talking about?
You don't seem to understand what Democratic leaders can and can't do.
So, are you answering my question about "who is faking the outrage?" with Democratic leadership?
What "evolution and growth" are you talking about? Can you can you be less general with the description?
What could Democratic leaders to do about the "affluenza" ruling? You seem to want to blame them for not undoing the ruling, or preventing this judge from making the ruling, but you haven't stated what it is that they could have done - just that you are mad, and have decided to be mad at Democratic leaders...
They spoke out - are you saying that was "fake outrage" too?
Are we still talking about judges and sentencing? I'm frustrated too, but I don't wring my hands over what can't be changed - which includes that ruling on affluenza.
What changes do you propose? You seem to think that there are some that Democrats are refusing to make - can you point them out for us?
It's not made of playdough, either. What are you referring to when you say "legal system?" Juries? Local ordinances? Specific judges? Sentencing guidelines?
Again - you seem to have this generalized anger about Democratic leaders not changing "the system" immediately when you're angry at something, and it's purposeful on the part of Democratic leaders who are "faking" outrage.

(11,885 posts)For giving manafort merely a slap on the wrist for his crimes, from either putin or trump ties, he'll regret his consequences if he did do that for them. He will be exposed , and those who either threatened to expose him, threatened him or his families safety, or bribed or offered some kind of a payoff from this sentence he gave him, it'll come out. I think this judge is corrupt, and like trump, he thinks he's above the law. I do suspect putin is involved in this too. Just a matter of time and they will regret what they've done. This was a pre-arranged deal it looks like more than anything else.
