The whiteness of this fucking whitewash on rich white man Manafort is sickening!

Today I feel like I need to apologize to every person of color because I belong to a race that includes Trump and his buddies! I am so disgusted at the obvious, blatant, fuck you if you don’t like my white ass privileged judge that I want to spit in his face!

Ugh!

Mar 2019

Judge Ellis said that the sentence was excessive and said “The only thing I can do is express my displeasure. .?.?. I chafe a bit at that, but I follow the law.”

Turner is white and this was his first serious offense, but unlike Manafort, wasn't in the same social class as the judge!

I theorize that when Judge Ellis looked down from his seat, he saw in Manafort, a reflection of himself,and that was a part of his decision to totally ignore the sentencing guidelines in this case!

He also received 9 months off for time served...that brings it down to 2 months more then Cohen got!

Manafort will face another sentencing hearing next week in D.C., and he's looking at a maximum of 10 years...which Mueller might ask that Manafort serve that sentence consecutively with the sentence Ellis gave him...it's a good chance that Manafort may end up serving at least 10 years in a federal prison!

We can hope that he serves at least 10 years which will make him 80 by the time he leaves prison...

I disagree with Manafort's sentence, but the credit for time served was not a present from the judge here. The only time a judge has discretion about giving back time is when a person is receiving a jail sentence, as opposed to a prison sentence. It's a little more complicated when it comes to pre-sentence credit for jail sentences, but I simplified that as it doesn't apply to Manafort.

Are you telling me you think it's fair for him to get virtually the same sentence for being convicted of 8 felonies, lying to prosecutors, telling them he would cooperate and then lying to them as Cohen got for completely cooperating with prosecutors? That's ridiculous and we can only hope the judge next week does what she can to remedy this disgusting sentence that never would have been given to a minority.

Paul Manafort’s lenient 4-year sentence — far below the recommended 20 years despite extensive felonies and post-conviction obstruction — is a reminder of the blatant inequities in our justice system that we all know about, because they reoccur every week in courts across America

To Ari's point, this entire thread...

For context on Manafort’s 47 months in prison, my client yesterday was offered 36-72 months in prison for stealing $100 worth of quarters from a residential laundry room.

Above thread unrolled --> https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1103809139900407808.html

TL;DR of thread -->
READ: For all those now reading this thread, before I go any further: I am not making the argument for *harsher sentences for anyone including Manafort.* I am simply pointing out the outrageous disparity between his treatment and others, disproportionately poor & people of color.

I’m not going to claim you’re wrong when you aren’t. But you’re not going deep enough if you think wealth and privilege isn’t about suppression of all others. I will go even further and posit that it can’t exist without denying economic benefits to others.

The plantation industry as it existed in the South existed ONLY because of slavery. If you want to know how deeply slavery is reflected in our present day social foundation start by looking a who built the White House, the very symbol of freedom. It was slave labor and I’m sure some white dude got ALL the credit and the wealth from it. Then go from there.

Then take a look at the farming industry of the past and the present and you can probably guess what I’m going to say. It has brought wealth to the privileged through the labor of oppressed Latinos who are underpaid and exploited n conditions designed to keep them poor and so economically needy that they’ll endure slavelike conditions just to survive. It’s an example of modern day slavery.

I can go on but you get my gist.

He may have made his Trump-loving, Republic' point, but I doubt very much that he's going to get a good night's rest -- not because he's feeling guilty or anything, but because he's clearly a very angry person and probably is beside himself with anger at one person or another, if not the entire world, at any given time.
