and it almost killed her.
It wrecked her insides.
I've heard and read similar stories from other women.
Yet these type conditions would be coldly ignored by the GOP and many women would die, unecessarily, in agony.
Those GOP lawmakers are a bunch of heartless bastards.
I heard that Sharron Engel has been calling people and pleading for conservative women in Missouri to support Akin.
Those women are much more dangerous than the men.

(111,381 posts)and equally dangerous.
What they demand is that an ectopic pregnancy be allowed to rupture before the woman is treated, rather than having it removed before she loses a third of her blood volume, goes into shock, and nearly dies.
These people are clearly insane.
We need to rebuild the state mental health infrastructure to get these loonies some help.

(81,527 posts)THAT is what scares me.
A couple of decades from now, they're gonna look around one day and discover that America ranks 88th in the world in reading skills, mathematical skills, knowledge of science and history, the scientific method; and all the cool new discoveries and gadgets and vaccines and cures and inventions and discoveries - are going to be coming from some other country. And I guarantee you they won't understand why. Even when you explain it to them.
But they'll be able to quote Deuteronomy and Leviticus til the cows come home, and they'll think that's good enough.

(22,507 posts)to go every other day to the doctor to get another blood test to see if the pregnancy hormones were going down. I really valued the doctors who were so kind to me because it was a horrible time. But after a period of time the hormones, "leveled off" as they said and stopped decreasing. I don't know what would have happened it they didn't do what they did next and that was to perform an abortion on me by giving a medication that was a cancer drug that killed cells.
To think that some jack ass would tell the doctor that they can't give me that shot is just unbelievable to me. To send a woman home so the fetus can grow while the woman knows it will explode in her stomach. This is torture. They are sadists.
they don't know what the fuck they are doing

(17,528 posts)That would be very painful! My sister had 2 ectopic pregnancies in spite of the fact the Dr. told her she couldn't have 2. We took her to another Dr. an sure enough she did. They operated on her both times removing the fallopian tubes... but that was in the 60's. By the way... she also had another baby between ectopic pregnancies in spite of the fact her Dr. told her she couldn't. I guess some Drs. don't know what they are talking about.

(79,302 posts)before that incident, she had given birth to my youngest niece -- against all odds.
Unfortunately my niece (Lisa) was murdered two years ago.
We always called her a miracle baby.

(2,682 posts)Incredible pain, ambulance, siren, flashing lights, emergency surgery at midnight -- it had already ruptured and I was bleeding internally. The minute that fertilized egg embedded itself in my fallopian tube, it became my murderer. It was well on its way to killing me. That fertilized egg was not going to live -- it would either die when they removed the tube or it would die when I did. It is beyond grotesque to think that a bunch of men in a room thousands of miles from where I was could make laws determining that I would die just so they could preach how virtuous they were and how "godly" they were. Fuck the lot of them.

(51,745 posts)Glad you made it. It sounds horrifying. I think it is evil to force ANY women to give birth against her will, but not even allowing an exception for ectopic pregnancy really crystallizes the lunacy of the anti-choice position. How can anyone not let a woman with an ectopic pregnancy have an abortion? It is sadistically medieval. The fetus and mother dies, and most likely that mother had children, who will then be left motherless.

(1,726 posts)but I always remember my niece who got pregnant with twins. At barely 24 weeks, she developed severe toxemia. She was put into a special hospital to try and control it. They had to bring the babies when her blood pressure reached 280/220. The shots to inflate the babies lungs didn't even have time to completely work. One baby died and there are assholes out there would have let nature take it's course. That's why I don't want to change the law.

(9,538 posts)A friend nearly died of this. I was misdiagnosed with it myself and thank God the doctor was wrong (it was a wanted pregnancy) but if it had been the case there's no question that I'd have had an abortion since I had a toddler to care for already. That number is from the federal govt. under Bush so no question that it's not inflated.
If you don't terminate a tubal pregnancy the woman faces peritonitis (massive abdominal infection), sterility, or death. There is no baby to save, because there is no room in the Fallopian tube for it to grow to term. Ultimately the tube bursts, the fertilized egg dies and if you don't take action to save the mother she is likely to die or face permanent harm.
Anyone who would deny a woman with a tubal pregnancy an IMMEDIATE abortion - no delays, even hours can be life-threatening, should be horse-whipped.

(5,043 posts)When I got pregnant unexpectedly (but happily) 5 years later, I called my doctor on a Sunday to report the "two red lines" on the home test and she ordered me to meet her at her office immediately.
A transvaginal ultrasound confirmed that the embryo was were she was supposed to be I delivered a healthy baby girl approximately 8 months later.
The point is, however, that she felt it was an absolute emergency to determine whether my pregnancy was viable since the last one was life threatening. If it had been in my tube, the next step was to immediately terminate the pregnancy, hopefully chemically by via emergency surgery that day if need be.
You are right - there is no time to waste. With the tubal, I lost 75% of my blood and they had to restart my heart 3 times during the emergency surgery. Another 30 minutes would have been 30 minutes too long and my husband would have been raising the son we already had by himself.

(9,275 posts)Those assholes who want to restrict abortion to the "life of the mother" would threaten doctors with sanctions if she wasn't "near death" enough. So women are going to die as most doctors and hospitals would err on the side of saving their own licenses and careers. I'm waiting for the first wrongful death lawsuit from the grieving husband of the woman whose life wasn't "in enough danger". I'm figuring, like the onerous "let doctors lie" laws (Kansas and OK) there will be laws granting doctors and hospitals immunity from lawsuits when they err on the side of the zygote.
In short, women will die. Add in illegal abortions and thousands of women will die Sacrificed at the altar of a "morality" that is far from universally shared.
Yes, I'm pro-life. Pro-WOMAN's-life.

(14,040 posts)that nearly killed her. I believe, if I remember correctly, the doctor's lost her twice during the surgery. This was about 30 years ago.
My sister was a drug addict for most of her life and during that time she was just beginning her journey with heroin. I firmly believe this was nature's way of making sure she didn't bring a child into this world (as harsh as that may sound).
These politician's that don't understand biology and that are pandering to the basest of their base, would turn doctor's into death squads by not allowing them to save the mother's life. I mean, can you imagine that conversation... "I'm sorry, but I'm not allowed to stop the internal bleeding because it could kill those non-viable cells that politicians' have named a child. Your wife/daughter/sister/mother has to die because my intervention could harm those cells."

(57,936 posts)The ignorance about the dangers that pregnancy can mean is inexcusable.
People assume that women having abortions are young, irresponsible, wild, over-sexed and "dirty."
No. Many of them are already mothers raising their living children with great love and care.
And, yes, some are young and not ready to bear the responsibility of supporting or caring for a child. Some are rape victims. Some have illnesses or conditions that could mean that they could not safely carry a baby to term anyway. Some women are warned that the fetus they are carrying is not going to be born alive in any event.
About 30% of fetuses are miscarried naturally. If God cared all that much for every fetus . . . . If God considered every fetus to be a full-fledged human being . . . . Maybe all fetuses would be given a fighting chance from the get-go.
Let's make sure every woman has the best prenatal care and the best birth control advice possible and then watch the percentages of abortions go down.
