T-Mobile CEO defends $195,000 in Trump hotel spending in letter to U.S. lawmakers

T-Mobile executives and employees have spent $195,000 at the Trump International Hotel in Washington, D.C., since announcing its proposed Sprint takeover in 2018, the Bellevue-based wireless company wrote in a letter to Democratic U.S. lawmakers.

The Puget Sound Business Journal obtained two letters sent by T-Mobile – one sent Feb. 6 by CEO John Legere and one sent Feb. 21 by Vice President of Federal Legislative Affairs Anthony Russo – to Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren and U.S. Rep. Pramila Jayapal, who represents the Washington state district that includes Seattle.

Warren and Jayapal inquired about T-Mobile's stays at the hotel after the Washington Post uncovered hotel records and eyewitnesses who said company executives stayed at the hotel the day after announcing the merger plan and repeatedly since then.

T-Mobile's $26.5 billion bid to acquire Sprint needs approval from federal regulators, the Federal Communications Commission and the Department of Justice. T-Mobile's stays at the hotel – to which President Donald Trump has financial ties – appeared to some as an attempt to curry favor with the Trump administration.

Hotel stay or blow Trump. I didn't want to do the latter. - John Legere
