At first sight, I face-palmed over the 2020 timeframe, then did again when a later paragraph contained the info that this is actually SPEEDING UP the date. Speeding up, as in on Church time. About the "I know my church" - it's a quote from an elderly relative. We had subscribed to pavers for the family, originally promised to be set by a certain date, which passed serenely without a sign of installation. I took the lead in following up and reported back regarding a couple of more deadlines being missed. My relative didn't flinch or share my concern, simply saying (the quote).
Although I'm lapsed, Pius XII was my birth pope and set the image for me of what a pope should be and look like. After him only John XXIII was fine with me. But aside from that, the argument is compelling that Holocaust survivors ought to have this cleared up "sooner" (like, than the "later" time it has already taken).

Jewish groups have accused Pius of staying silent during the Holocaust. But Catholic officials insist he worked hard behind the scenes to save lives.
. Pope Francis announced Monday that he will open up the Vaticans secret archives on Pius starting March 2, 2020 ― the 81st anniversary of Pius election. Francis said hes opening the records with a serene and confident mind, The New York Times reports. .
Francis announcement means Pius archives will be opened about eight years ahead of schedule. The Vatican typically waits 70 years after the end of a papacy to open a popes records to researchers, the AP reports. .
Its possible that the questions about Pius legacy have slowed down his canonization process, The Washington Post reports. Three of the four pontiffs who succeeded Pius have already become saints. .

I'm sure Pius did it so the church could survive into the future.

(70,706 posts)However, I've missed official statements of support for SHITLER. I've seen lots of church criticisms of SHITLER regarding the wall and other things, while many down the pecking order (bishops/priests) are vociferously anti-Choice. Not to say that the top is not anti-Choice but seems to back off from telling the membership *how* to vote?
I'd be interested in your expanding on your view.

(32,641 posts)He said the Catholic Church as an institution, didn't do enough to oppose the Nazis and to save the Jews. There were a few heroes here and there, but the Church could have done more to oppose fascism and to prevent the Holocaust. The admission and apology that Pope Francis offered a year or two ago, was maybe in anticipation of opening of the Pius XII archive. I don't know, but that would be my guess.

(32,641 posts)I guess I may be mistaken. In searching I came across an apology to Jewish survivors of the Holocaust by Pope John Paul II that was made over 20 years ago. However I find nothing written or spoken by Pope Francis on that subject.
Sorry if my previous post is incorrect. I'll keep searching and I'll post a link here if I can find something.

(6,395 posts)...but it was drop in a bucket. And that drop was damn dangerous, if they got caught, the Pope would have had to flee to Switzerland or Southern France...and we would have second episode of a lot of dead Swiss Guards.
Some could argue, that Italy would never toss out the Pope and Spain, despite not part of the war but an ally wouldn't go for it either, so they could have risked more. The problem is, it wasn't Italy's et. al. decision. Hitler would have easily facilitated an early demise of the Pope along with an "election" at gun point.
And you had to look at it from that era's perspective, they didn't know Nazi Germany would be defeated. Catholic nations in Europe were falling, the UK was holding out, but its technically Protestant. The Soviet Union was holding out, but they were considered Orthodox and despite the Greek Patriarch being the first among equals, like today, the Russian Patriarch holds all the cards. So from their view, they were fresh out of allies. They had to deal with the possibility of living under Nazi rule.
