Listening to the Republican spokes-whores these days is like hearing Ralph Cramden trying to worm his way out of an obvious lie when confronted by Alice: Hamena, hamena, hamena.
And sadly, they somehow believe they can convince a nation that their pResident wasnt out bowling with his buddies when he was supposed to be meeting Alices mom at the train station and the fact that he snuck into the apartment at midnight with his ball and his bowling shoes is simply a figment of everyones over-active imaginations.
Watching CNN tonight, Niger Innis when asked about Trumps obvious lies got so tongue-tied, he could barely respond beyond hamena, hamena, hamena. Its been the same reaction from other GOPers when asked about Trumps lies basically that everyone in politics lies, hamena, hamena, hamena and this pResident is no different than others.
According to Washington Posts fact checkers database that analyzes, categorizes and tracks every suspect statement uttered by the pResident, Trump made 7,645 claims through Dec. 30th, the 710th day of his term in office, that were proven to be deliberately misleading or outright lies.
And the response from the Trump-humping spokes-whores is now, if nothing else, consistent: Hamena, hamena, hamena
Ive never heard him lie about anything.
Throughout the ongoing exposure of Spankys lies, the admonition from Republicans has been equally consistent: Dont believe your own eyes, and dont believe your own ears. And unfortunately, there are those among us who are stupid enough to ignore what they see and what they hear, choosing instead to believe what they are told to believe, despite all evidence to the contrary.
What it all comes down to is this: When those who support their lying pResident insist that hes never lied, they themselves are lying to the people who look to them to tell the truth. When members of a political party spend their time normalizing lying by denying its even happening, its a sure sign that they have nothing to offer beyond hamena, hamena, hamena.
Given what is now being exposed on a daily basis thanks to House Democrats determined to investigate and expose the truth, and given what is yet to come from Mueller and the SDNY, perhaps the Republicans should consider framing their 2020 campaign around the idea that hamena, hamena, hamena is the appropriate response to the proof that their pResident is a lying, Russian-colluding, sexist, bigoted, racist, pussy-grabber.
Vote Republican! Why? Well, hamena, hamena, hamena
Its kind of catchy, dontcha think? I can almost picture it on a red, made-in-China hat, proudly worn by those who used to have good-paying jobs at a US factory that manufactured slogan-embossed hats.

are more Archie Bunker than President Bartlett, closer to Frank Burns than Hawkeye and BJ, more Boss Hogg than Sheriff Matt Dillon, and more reminiscent of a sit-com than a functioning administration, a comparison to The Honeymooners is as kind as one can get.
At least Ralph got a laugh when he hamena, hamena, hamenaed. When an entire political party thinks it appropriate to hem-and-haw on a daily basis, it's really not funny.

(313 posts)Not the clownish and appalling circumstances inspiring it, but love the analysis. Completely apt, completely right-on, completely appropriate.

(4,921 posts)"to the moon, Alice." You know, about how hard he wants to punch her when she does things like that.
I remember discussions here on DU about how bad it was that someone had a gif of Frankenstein and the girl by the lake. I'm sure the domestic violence outrage will start here soon.

(27,814 posts)Who can forget the episodes where Alice was sporting a black eye, or an arm in a cast, or the way she cowered and shook in fear when Ralph threatened to send her to the moon?

(4,921 posts)Bold choice, Cotton.
So as long as he doesn't hit her, (or hit her in a way that doesn't show) there's no problem and no abuse? I feel that that isn't true. I feel that verbal and emotional abuse are also real. I feel there are several hashtags for movements that support my position. Perhaps you disagree.

(27,814 posts)Do you seriously believe that Ralph Cramden was a wife-beater, and the audience should assume that Alice was battered off-screen in ways that wouldnt show?
Are you for real???
The only character in The Honeymooners who ever looked scared was Ralph. All it took was for Alice to put her hands on her hips and glare at him, and he was reduced to his trademark stammer of hamena, hamena, hamena.
Alice never missed an opportunity to tell Ralph to his face when he was acting like an idiot. She never backed down, not even once.
Ralph was the one who was always trying to cover-up his lies, or his stupidity for getting entrenched in get-rich-quick schemes.
If there was any message that The Honeymooners conveyed, it was that Alice was the boss of the household, who brooked no bullshit from a husband who wasnt anywhere near as savvy and as intelligent as she was.
Im from Brooklyn, NY and The Honeymooners was beloved by my entire family simply for the reason that it portrayed working-class people as they really were. They fought, they threatened, and their arguments were loud enough to be known to everyone in the neighbourhood. It had nothing to do with husbands intimidating their wives or vice versa. It had to do with how married couples interacted with each other, especially in circumstances where money was tight and the dream of getting ahead was always just out of reach.
Tempers flared, and threats like one of these days, pow, right to the moon were as commonplace as they were meaningless in the great scheme of things.
The show was never about one spouse lording it over the other it was about a couple who loved each other no matter how difficult their lives might be.
The fact that you missed that message as blatantly obvious as it was is truly sad.

(13,038 posts)Toward his wife, and in the 50s that was unremarkable. The fact that Alice coped with an abusive relationship was and still is unremarkable. What is remarkable is somebody on a progressive website defending that crap.
NanceGreggs
(27,814 posts)... is someone trying to insist that Alice "coped with an abusive relationship" when there wasn't one.
Do you really think that anyone who watched The Honeymooners - then OR now - thought the catch-phrase "Pow, to the moon" was an actual threat?
Just stop. Before last night, I had never even heard anyone suggest such a thing.
BTW, when you hear someone say things like, "If you ate the last piece of pie, I'm going to kill you," do you really think they're threatening murder?

(13,038 posts)is just funny.
Sure thing. The best way out of a hole is to dig deeper. Need a shovel?
NanceGreggs
(27,814 posts)... is what you're shoveling.
If you want to believe that Ralph ever actually "threatened" Alice, that's your prerogative.
What's sad is that you've completely missed what the show was really all about.
Millions of people have loved the series for decades, and consider it a true love story. If you feel some need to see it as "a huge man verbally threatening a small woman" - well, maybe you just have a need, for whatever reason, to see things that aren't there.
