I wonder when the GOP will say it was just a joke?

GOP's anti-Muslim display likening Rep. Omar to a terrorist rocks W. Virginia capitol

Angry arguments broke out in the West Virginia statehouse on Friday after the state Republican Party allegedly set up an anti-Muslim display in the rotunda linking the 9/11 terror attacks to a freshman congresswoman from Minnesota.

One staff member was physically injured during the morning's confrontations, and another official resigned after being accused of making anti-Muslim comments.
The display featured a picture of the World Trade Center in New York City as a fireball exploded from the one of the Twin Towers, set above a picture of Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar, who's a Muslim.

"'Never forget' - you said. . ." read a caption on the first picture. "I am the proof - you have forgotten," read the caption under the picture of Omar, who is wearing a hijab.
The display was set up as part of "WV GOP Day," which the party advertised on Facebook as a day when "Republicans Take the Rotunda."
Several Democrats objected to the display, and reportedly got into an argument with the House's sergeant at arms, Anne Lieberman, after she allegedly made an anti-Muslim remark.

No trying to understand.

No attempt to see them as just misguided or ignorant.

No reaching out unless it's with a fucking fist.

These fucksticks have become nothing but pure unadulterated evil.

They need to be defeated.

If our country is to survive... they MUST be defeated.

Eric Porterfield, a Republican delegate in the West Virginia legislature, is being denounced by his own party and is facing calls to resign from Democrats after calling LGBTQ groups "the closest thing to political terrorism in America" and "a modern day version of the Ku Klux Klan."

He initially made the remarks last week during a legislative debate in the state's House of Delegates, but he then doubled down on his anti-LGBTQ views during a phone interview with NBC News.

"The LGBTQ — not homosexuals, but the LGBTQ — is the closest thing to political terrorism in America," Porterfield told NBC News. While Porterfield did not elaborate on what he specifically meant by "the LGBTQ," he appeared to be speaking about lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people who advocate for LGBTQ rights.

Porterfield started his nearly week-long series of commentary regarding "the LGBTQ" last Wednesday in the West Virginia House during a debate about local discrimination ordinances.

“The LGBT is the most socialist group in this country,” he said during an "extended diatribe," according to The Charleston Gazette-Mail. “They do not protect gays. There are many gays they persecute if they do not line up with their social ideology.”

Porterfield then reiterated his views during an interview on Friday with the paper. “The LGBTQ is a modern day version of the Ku Klux Klan, without wearing hoods with their antics of hate,” Porterfield told the Gazette-Mail.

It just chaps their hate-filled asses knowing that Omar and AOC have such bright political futures ahead of them while they and their kind are on the cusp of extinction.

An Islamophobic display targeting Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) is displayed in the West Virginia Capitol Rotunda on Friday during a day of events sponsored by the state Republican Party

March 1 at 9:12 PM

Friday was a day meant to celebrate the Republican Party in the West Virginia Capitol. But a poster connecting a Muslim congresswoman to the 9/11 terrorist attacks led to heated emotions, caused the resignation of at least one staff member and left another reportedly injured when things got physical as the altercation spilled into the chamber of the West Virginia House of Delegates.

A lot of you DU posters think that Texas is awful, I'll tell you what, I wouidn't want to live in many of the east coast states, including West Virginia.

But no Republican delegates condemned the poster, Pushkin said. “I’m really disappointed that not a single Republican elected official in this building could join me in saying it’s wrong,” he said.

This display was put up by ACT for America, an anti-Muslim group. According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, "ACT for America is listed as an anti-Muslim hate group because it pushes wild anti-Muslim conspiracy theories, denigrates American Muslims and deliberately conflates mainstream and radical Islam."

Here's the basic story, from the folks on the ground.

https://www.wsaz.com/content/news/Controversy-erupts-over-hate-speech-poster-on-display-in-WVa-Capitol-rotunda-506560451.html

There is an odd interview of the woman who put up the poster on the Twitter feed of the West Virginia Democratic party:

The tweet says "Today at @WVGOP day, a vendor displayed a sign promoting HATE towards Muslim Americans. Here’s what she had to say... #wvpol", and has a handheld video. A truly bizarre woman! The comments, for the most part, would make any Democrat proud!
