I've sure learned a lot here in 16 years - from the articles I've read, the posts I've made and from DUers with a lot more knowledge than I'll ever have. I'd always voted, mostly for Democrats, but it was 9/11 that woke me up. I had a dentist appointment that day and I knew that something had happened, but it wasn't until I was sitting in the dentist's chair, watching the TV that my dentist had turned to CNN, and seeing footage of that second plane hitting the South Tower over and over and over that I learned that this country was under attack.
I walked out into the warm September sun scared witless - and that's when I realized that I needed to learn a lot more about what was really going on in this country and the world. So I started reading and paying a lot more attention to the news and in early 2003 a friend introduced me to DU.
I was on DU the night of "shock and awe." It was a DUer who posted that something was happening soon - despite Nelson Mandela's powerful speech that I was sure would convince the Bush* administration to back off. I remembered a post by a DUer - a photo of of a little Iraqi boy pushing a tiny boat with a candle out into the water as part of a peace ceremony - and I thought of that child and wondered if he was scared that night - or even if he was still alive.
And I was here for the election of 2004 when I was sure that the election was a sure thing after the debacle of Iraq and, along with others here, I was grateful for the two forums provided by the admins for us. GD and GDP had been turned into a place for us to share our reactions. One was for anger and venting and the other was for help and sympathy. I mostly posted in the latter.
I was here on July 6, 2003 for the beginning of DU.2 and in December 2011 when we moved to DU.3. I've learned so much here, made friends here and tried to give a little back as a mod, then as a host and on MIRT. That's why I have so many posts. I've stepped up and worked on 3 congressional campaigns here in NY-20 - which changed here to NY-21 in 2015. And I couldn't have done that without all that I've learned here on DU. And now in this horror show that we're experiencing together since November 2016, yet another attack on this country, I'm more grateful to DU than ever. Anyway, on the occasion of my unbelievable 100,000th post, I just wanted to say thank you...
Rhiannon12866
p.s. And a hat tip to my first friend on DU, newyawker99, and her Milestone threads - who welcomed me on my very first post!

(55,019 posts)and thanks for posting the late night comedy show videos! you are my source!

(205,920 posts)And that's just a small way of giving back. They make me feel better every night, so I decided to pay it forward. I thought we sure could use more humor here these days!

(54,436 posts)Some leave, some (like me) just aren't around enough (day job, family and all), and some just lurk.
100,000 posts means you're either obsessed or committed, and I think I can safely place you in the latter category!

(7,888 posts)I read more often than I comment. I've even sought out (to read or comment on diaries) those suffering from insomnia so this is a fine place for global time zones, international news and views.

(90,779 posts)We got here within a few months of each other, it looks like, as I arrived about Sept 2002. What a long strange trip it's been.
Rhiannon12866
(205,920 posts)And I wanted to share a little about what I've experienced. I got a reply on my very first post - and I totally panicked because I'd never been on any sort of message board before - but it turned out to be newyawker99 welcoming me to DU! She became my first DU friend and I stuck around.

(90,779 posts)...but this is the one I immediately liked, for many reasons (the civility rules not least among them), and I have stayed.

(205,920 posts)Early on, I happened across some other site, don't remember what it was now, but it obviously was unmoderated. I posted something like I would have on DU and several came after me like a ton of bricks - and I never went back!

(205,920 posts)And it dawned on me that I should have mentioned newyawker99 and her Milestone threads. She welcomed me on my very first post and it totally baffled me how she could keep track of us all. We used to celebrate Milestones on a regular basis and it really was her efforts that inspired me to post something.
Raine
(30,540 posts)put up a post for them. I was always amazed that she was able to do it.
Rhiannon12866
(205,920 posts)But it was such an amazing contribution, recognizing everyone's Milestones. She was also a terrific mod. We've often speculated where she went, but I remember that she wasn't well.

(205,920 posts)I was taking the required term off of MIRT and was looking for something else to post about - and it dawned on me how much better they made me feel after a day of rotten news, so I started posting the ones I watch. I'm so glad that others here are enjoying them, too.

(53,979 posts)Like you, I was at a dentist appointment on 9-11 and was in the chair when a plane hit the Pentagon. The place I worked had both a North and South Tower, so it was a bit surreal.
Love working with you on MIRT!
and congrats!
Rhiannon12866
(205,920 posts)I don't even remember what I had done there that day - it turned into kind of chaos. I'm not in the City, but folks there knew those who were, so the phone was ringing and everyone was shaken. I've known my dentist since the '80s, she's treated half of my extended family, but we never discussed politics. But I mentioned my experience once before on DU and someone suggested I should tell her - so I did - and it turns ot that she's "one of us," as is her 22-year-old assistant. So she often turns on MSNBC for me and we do commiserate with what's been going on lately. I also had dental surgery on election day 2016 - I should have realized that was a bad decision.
Ad I am always grateful for you on MIRT, my friend!

(205,920 posts)Back in the day we had Milestone threads - newyawker99 would list all the Milestones of the week and they were always quite popular. I remember when I made 1000 posts which was a huge Milestone back in the day, but we all were kinda new back then. DU has changed so much since back then, but every incarnation had so many improvements.
Thanks so much for your kind words and support - when I read your post I decided to acknowledge this, since it only comes around once and I've changed as much as DU has over the years. I'd never been on a message board before and totally panicked when I got a reply on my very first post - but it was newyawker99 welcoming me to DU. So I stayed and have never regretted it - or the wonderful friends I've made over the years..

(129,386 posts)and the DU2 number of posts stopping at 1000 and only showing " (1000+ posts) " after that.
If I see someone approaching or at a milestone, I try to acknowledge it. I know people have done that for me. In many cases, people aren't even paying attention to their post count and are surprised.
Rhiannon12866
(205,920 posts)So often I've taken a look after awhile and been kinda shocked. When we participate in certain forums, the posts just add up. So I knew I was close and thanks for the inspiration to acknowledge it.

Rhiannon12866
(205,920 posts)I still remember when I was acknowledged for making 1000 posts - and some of the DUers who shared that with me. There were fewer of us back in the day and we knew pretty much everybody. We sure have grown since back then, but DU is still a community - and it sure helps us get us through days like we're experiencing now, and here we thought that Bush*/Cheney was tough to deal with. DU may have evolved, but it's such a reassuring thing to know that there are so many in the same corner.

(6,254 posts)when you bring up politics. The terror in my wife and 4 kids, who are all Dems, face when I bring up Trump or Republicans is palpable. I consider myself a patriot yet they look at me like I am out of my mind. Only my DU family can understand. So that is for the 100,000 posts I wish I knew about DU during The Bush years.
