Marijuana legalization bill headed to House floor

SANTA FE A bill that would make New Mexico the 11th state in the nation along with Washington DC to legalize recreational marijuana use is steaming toward the full House after passing its second committee hurdle.
Backers of the measure say its inevitable that New Mexico will eventually legalize recreational marijuana use, citing the trend of other states enacting such laws and polls that have shown broad public support for such a policy shift.
Prohibition has not worked. The war on drugs has been a failure, said Rep. Javier Martinez, D-Albuquerque, one of the bills sponsors. I believe that by legalizing recreational cannabis we can turn the war on drugs on its head.
But the House Judiciary Committees decision to advance the legislation, House Bill 356, only came after hours of debate Saturday...

(15,235 posts)Maybe, with casino resort hotels and convenient, ancient, Native American archeological sites, original nuclear museums and wildlife refuges, we can attract some Texas tourism, where neither gambling nor marijuana is legal. This will provide an ever-growing cash-cow, for our underfunded, sub-standard educational system.

Canadian lawmakers approved landmark legislation on Tuesday to fully legalize marijuana.
The move will make Canada the second country in the world to legalize cannabis for both medical and recreational purposes nationwide. Uruguay was the first to fully legalize the drug.
Bill C-45, also known as the Cannabis Act, was first introduced on April 13, 2017, in a bid to legalize and regulate the recreational use of weed. The bill passed in the House of Commons that November and then passed in the Senate on Tuesday night by a vote of 52-29, with two abstentions.
