Good grief Theresa May not

Another massive defeat in the House of Commons
------------------------------------------------------
https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2019/feb/14/theresa-may-defeated-on-brexit-again-as-erg-tories-abstain

Theresa May has suffered an embarrassing defeat at the hands of hardline Brexit supporters who refused to support her approach to leaving the European Union.

A group of Eurosceptics led by Jacob Rees-Mogg abstained on a government motion because they were unhappy that it appeared to rule out a no-deal Brexit.

May was not present for the House of Commons defeat, by 303 votes to 258, in which she again lost control of her party in the crucial final weeks before Britain is due to leave the EU on 29 March.

It is likely to cause fresh doubt in Brussels that May has the power to win parliament’s support for an amended EU withdrawal agreement.

Right wing Britons, like right wing US voters and politicians, are reflexively against everything but for nothing.

And nothing is what they have accomplished, until an unregulated Brexit costs the country heavily.

in Britain until they get new trade agreements in place (and the EU, the UK's biggest trading partner, is going to be very much less inclined to deal with the UK in the event of no deal)

Because you are in favour of a hard border between NI and the Republic of Ireland that will nullify the Good Friday Agreement and likely lead to a resurgence of violence.

Because you want to see people die due to lack of medical supplies and health care staff, a large fraction of whom are nationals of other EU countries.

Because you are in favour of food shortages and rationing.

A no-deal Brexit will benefit very few in Britain, but one of them happens to be Jacob Rees-Mogg. For most people, it will be a disaster.

People should have contemplated all that beforehand, right?

Yes, let the entitled aristocrats behind Brexit show us their stuff. They are intellectually and morally lazy people and they will fail miserably. Maybe then England can say goodbye to them as a force in public life once and forever. That day is long overdue.

England cannot claim special circumstances without the whole thing falling apart. I’m sorry. They need to get over themselves and see that their future is with a strong and united Europe. But five weeks out it’s too late for that. So let them learn the hard way and come back to reality.

And cutting a generous deal would weaken the whole EU endeavor, maybe even fatally. So the leverage is on balance firmly with the EU and its 27 other member states. England has screwed itself.

This data is from last fall but I doubt it has moved:

http://www.europarl.europa.eu/news/en/press-room/20181017IPR16308/eurobarometer-public-opinion-survey-shows-that-eu-is-more-appreciated-than-ever

If anything those numbers have probably gotten stronger. As you can see from this round-up it’s pretty easy to identify newfound appreciation for the EU around the continent:

The vote where there was a difference between the 2 was on an SNP amendment for a delay in leaving:

An SNP amendment, backed by the Liberal Democrats and calling for Britain's departure from the EU on 29 March to be delayed by three months, was defeated by 93 votes to 315 after most Labour MPs abstained.

This is getting precariously close to a no deal Brexit and just because you think Corbyn will win doesn't mean you should put your people through immense pain over it. Join labour and the lib dems to end this current government and then ask for the EU to extend the deadline so that the Brits can maybe stay in the EU if they vote for parties advocating for that. This never-ending parade of rejected proposals is getting old.

Borders--"Everything on that side of the river is bad, everything on this side
is good".
Race--"Everyone knows that light colored skin is superior."
Religion--"Our Gods hate each other."
Gay rights--"Some kinds of love are bad."

Someday it won't be just a European Union, but a World Union.
All one. One song.
