Senator Beto? O'Rourke Meets With Schumer To Talk 2020 Senate

By Kate Riga

Beto O’Rourke met with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) last week to discuss taking on Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) in 2020, according to a Wednesday Politico report.

Cornyn is seen as vulnerable after O’Rourke’s surprisingly competitive bid against Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) in 2018. The senator has already amassed the largest war chest of any of his peers.

“We’ve gotten complacent,” Cornyn told Politico. “The tectonic plates shifted in Texas in 2018 and I think everybody realized we need to do something different and to address those concerns or else we’re in trouble.”

O’Rourke is expected to make a decision on a possible presidential bid by the end of this month.

I think this would be a great path for Beto. I hope he chooses this route. Nanjeanne Feb 2019 #2

I was hoping for this, too, but Cornyn will be more difficult to defeat than Cruz. aikoaiko Feb 2019 #8
Probably a better route than president for him right now. 2naSalit Feb 2019 #9

this is great news. Run against Cornyn, and now we need someone to run against McConnell, let's flush out the corrupt repigs.

This would definitely be a stepping stone for Beto to further his goals.

we have many good candidates as it is, and we'll need help flipping the Senate. Repubs will be stretched thin trying to hold onto Senate seats. It might be a great year to challenge Cornyn.

Beto would do a wonderful job in the Senate and he would receive more national experience prior to a presidential run.

Cruz was vulnerable, but the GOP voters still rallied to save him.

Cornyn doesn't seem as vulnerable.

In the current field of candidates, he'd be spending a lot of $ and probably not be the nominee. In a Senate race, he can focus on his state for a term or two and gain more national cred in that time. He's young, his day is in the future, not that far into the future, we'll need a line up in four -eight years after 2020. Someone with good sense and young children to provide for.

Because there are still too many Republican voters in Texas, and Cruz is so unlikable. He would be better off as a national candidate, President or VP.
